Welcome to the biggest week of the year for local rugby in the Wellington region.
Wainuiomata and Northern United will be contesting the Jubilee Cup final at the Petone Rec on Saturday, one of nine finals scheduled for the day.
The All Blacks are also in town and host the Springboks at Westpac Stadium at 7.35pm, but frankly this match is just a sideshow!
Before that, the St Pat’s Silverstream versus St Pat’s Town annual traditional is this Wednesday at Silverstream, kick-off at 12.40pm. This is preceded by the annual game between the old boys of both schools that kicks off at 11.00am. There is also a full round of college matches on Saturday (more on those below).

The last time both home teams lost the Jubilee Cup semi-finals? That came a decade ago when Norths took down top qualifiers Poneke 30-10 and MSP edged Petone 15-8 at the Rec. MSP would prevail 21-16 the following week at Westpac Stadium with Chris Slade kicking seven penalties to get his side home.

The curse of the top qualifier is a real thing in the Wellington First XV competition. Is one unfolding in the Jubilee Cup too? With this year’s top qualifier Ories being knocked out by Wainuiomata on Saturday, that means just five of the 15 Andy Leslie Trophy winners since 2005 have gone on to win the Jubilee Cup.

Spare a thought for HOBM’s Under 85kg Howlers team. Their season came to an end when Paraparaumu crossed with time well-expired on Saturday. Their four results in their second-round matches? 9-16, 6-10, 7-12, and 16-17 – all bonus point losses.

Wellington College’s 17-23 loss to Wairarapa College in Masterton on Saturday confirms two things. One is that Wellington will miss the top-four and will have to go through the qualification process next season, and the second is that St Pat’s Town, Scots, Silverstream, and Rongotai will contest the Premiership semi-finals. The order of that will be determined over the next 10 days, starting with the Silverstream vs St Pat’s Town Traditional this Wednesday.

A good showing from the Wellington contingent in the NZ Maori U20s win over their Fijian counterparts on Saturday night in Rotorua. MSP’s Leo Thompson was the star of the show and got on the scoresheet, as did Sam Smith (Wainuiomata) with a double and Isaac Bracewell (Wellington) from the bench. Other Wellington players involved were starters Keelan Whitman (MSP) and Shamus Hurley-Langton (OBU), and replacement front-rowers Tyrone Thompson (MSP) and Tanara Haenga (Wainuiomata).

Some more silverware decided in club rugby competitions around the country this weekend, including Ponsonby winning in Auckland, Hautapu in Waikato, Napier Old Boys Marist in Hawke’s Bay, East Coast Bays in North Harbour, Te Puna in the Bay of Plenty and others.
Close to home, Foxton won the Ramsbottom Cup in Horowhenua-Kapiti for the first time since 1988. Foxton edged out recent champions Waikanae 31-25 in the final played at Levin Domain on Saturday.
Gladstone will meet Martinborough in the Wairarapa-Bush final this coming weekend, after Gladstone beat Eketahuna 28-12 in one semi-final and Marlborough defeated Greytown 15-10 in the other.

Poneke wing/fullback Nick Robertson has been selected for the Phillipines National Sevens Team in their 2019 quest to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan.
He is the first Wellington club rugby player already selected for a 2019 international Sevens Squad. He will take the field for the Phillipines Volcanoes at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Qualifiers in Korea in November, and the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Manila. In addition to this he will play in the Asia Sevens throughout August and September. The top two Asian teams will qualify for the Olympics, the Philippines are currently ranked 3rd so they have the genuine possible chance of securing a spot in the Olympic Games. He will be coached by past All Black flyhalf Frano Botica.

This Thursday Poneke will be hosting “Sky Kick-off” a 30 minute Magazine-style Rugby show starring Cory Jane, Mils Muliaina, Karl Tenana, Izzy Dagg and Hosted by Kirstie Stanaway. Its 30 minutes of high paced Rugby chat and banter and will be Broadcast Live from their clubrooms at 8.30pm.
What else is happening that night?
- From 6.30pm there will be a Rugby Quiz being hosted by “GeeQuiz” – grab some friends and form a team!
- Finger Food will be available and the Bar will be open.
- Auctions and Raffles will also be held throughout the night.
