Qualifying Final v Brumbies: Won 66-12

The Hurricanes made up for last year’s 28-35 Qualifying Final loss against the Brumbies in Canberra by winning this year at home in Wellington.

The two sides have a history of meeting at Quarter-Final or Qualifying Final level. They have now done so on five occasions with the Brumbies slightly ahead with three wins to the Hurricanes two. The first time was in 2017 when the Hurricanes won 35-16. The Brumbies then won 35-25 in 2022, won 37-33 in 2023 and 35-28 in 2025.

All four of those matches were played in Canberra.

Winning this match means the Hurricanes go on to host one of the Semi-Final matches and the Brumbies season is over.

The Hurricanes and the Brumbies have now met on 36 occasions The Hurricanes have won 16 times to the Brumbies 20.

The Hurricanes have won their last two matches against the Brumbies (they also beat them 45-12 in Round 11).

They had not won two in a row since winning both matches played in 2017.

The Hurricanes passed 50 points in a match for the 30th time and extended their Super Rugby record for most scores of 50 points or more in the same season to six. It was the second time they have scored 66 points: they beat the Rebels 66-24 at Wellington in 2012. Those 66 points, however, have been bettered against an Australian side. At Wellington in 2017 the Hurricanes beat the Rebels 71-6.

The Hurricanes 66 points are the most ever conceded by the Brumbies in their Super Rugby history. Previously the most points they had conceded was 56, twice: in their 7-56 loss at Wellington in 2009 and 21-56 loss at Napier in 2017, both times against the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes therefore hold the record for the top three scores by any side against the Brumbies. They also share the sixth highest score (49) with the Chiefs.

  • The Hurricanes margin of victory (54 points) is a new record for them against the Brumbies. The previous record was the 49 point difference in their 56-7 win in 2009.
  • The Hurricanes have conceded 12 points in a match on 16 occasions losing just once: 10-12 against the Brumbies at Canberra in 2021.
  • The Hurricanes halftime score (38-7) is also a new record for most points scored against the Brumbies in the first 40 minutes of a match. The former record was the 25-7 lead at halftime at Wellington in 2009.
  • Those 38 points at halftime against the Brumbies were the most to have been scored by the Hurricanes since they went to the break, ahead 45-5 to the Sunwolves at Tokyo in 2017.
  • The Hurricanes have played the Brumbies 15 times in New Zealand for 10 wins and five losses. The Hurricanes have won the last six matches in a row: the Brumbies last win (29-21) was at Wellington in 2014.
  • This win was the Hurricanes 50th against all Australian sides in New Zealand, in 60 matches. Such is their dominance at home the Hurricanes have won their last 24 matches against Australian sides, their last loss being against the Waratahs (24-29) at Wellington in 2015.
  • In the match the Hurricanes brought up 1,000 points against the Brumbies and the total now sits on 1,032, exactly 100 points more than the 932 they have conceded against them. The Brumbies are the fifth side (and first Australian) the Hurricanes have scored 1000 points against. The other four are the Highlanders (1,233), theBlues (1,190), the Chiefs (1,161) and the Crusaders (1,051).

The Hurricanes established yet another record in the match. It was their 150th win in all matches played at home venues. The breakdown is: Napier (12 wins), New Plymouth (eight wins), Palmerston North (10 wins) and 120 shared between the two Wellington venues: three at the old Athletic Park and 117 at Westpac/Sky/Hnry Stadium.

The Hurricanes have won all of their seven matches played at home venues in 2026 and remain unbeaten in their last 10, nine in Wellington and one in Napier. Their last loss was against the Crusaders at Wellington in Round 9 last year.

The fifth try (Cameron Roigard’s second in the match) against the Brumbies was the Hurricanes 500th against all Australian sides. The total now sits on 504. A breakdown of who the tries have been scored against is: the Brumbies (126), the Force (80), the Rebels (79), the Reds (108) and the Waratahs (111).

The Hurricanes scored a record nine tries against the Brumbies beating their old record of eight scored twice before: at Wellington in 2009 and Napier in 2017.

The Brumbies had never before conceded nine tries in a match. The Hurricanes had also held the previous record of eight, on the two occasions mentioned above.

In all matches the Hurricanes have scored nine tries or more 15 times: nine tries eight times, 10 tries three times, 11 tries three times and 13 tries once.

The Hurricanes made nine changes to the starting XV which took the field in the previous match against the Crusaders. There were three changes in the backs and six in the forwards.

The Hurricanes starting XV boasted a total of exactly 1,000 caps (forwards 578 and backs 422) between them. The total on the reserves bench was 468.

Caleb Delany scored his third try (first against the Brumbies) in his 51st match. It was his first try in two years.

Cameron Roigard scored his 26th and 27th try in his 59th appearance. It was the fifth time he has scored two tries in a match. He now has three against the Brumbies.

Billy Proctor’s try was his 27th and like Roigard he too has scored three against the Brumbies. It was Proctor’s 81st match for the Hurricanes.

Warner Dearns scored two tries in a match for the first time and now has five tries for the Hurricanes in 13

appearances. Not many Hurricanes forwards have scored two tries in a match against the Brumbies. Dearns,

who is the fifth player to do so after Chris Masoe (2008), Callum Gibbins (2017), Dane Coles (2019) and Xavier Numia (2024), is the only one to have done it in Wellington.

Ngane Punivai scored his first hat-trick in Super Rugby and now has eight tries for the Hurricanes in 18 matches. (He also scored four tries for the Highlanders whom he played for between 2020 and 2022). Punivai scored a double against the Brumbies at Canberra last year as well.

Try time for Ngane Punivai.

Three others have also scored three tries in a match against the Brumbies: Ma’a Nonu in 2005, Vince Aso in 2017 and Ngani Laumape in 2019. However, the Hurricanes record for most tries in a match is four, by Fehi Fineanganofo as long ago as at Christchurch in Round 11 earlier in the season.

This year 10 different players between them have provided a record equalling 17 instances of two or more tries being scored by an individual in a match. For the record two tries have been scored 10 times, three tries five times and four tries twice. In 2017, when there were also 17 instances of two or more tries being scored, “only” nine individuals were involved who scored two tries 14 times and three tries three times between them.

In all matches played by the Hurricanes there have now been 199 instances of two or more tries being scored by a player in a match. Christian Cullen has achieved this more times than anyone else with 14 closely followed by Ma’a Nonu with 12. Alama Ieremia scored the Hurricanes first-ever try in Match #1, Cullen was the first to score two tries (Match #6), Tana Umaga was the first to score three tries (Match #14) and the first to score four tries in a match was Ben Lam, in Match #303.

Ruben Love kicked 21 points, his best return in 53 matches for the Hurricanes. Those points brought up 100 for the season and at the conclusion of the match he sat in equal first-place on the list for most points scored in 2026. It was the first time he has scored 100 points in a season: last year he top-scored for the Hurricanes with 84 points.

Of the 31 seasons of Super Rugby, 100 points by a single player has only been achieved on 19 occasions: twice by Jon Preston, twice by David Holwell, once by Jimmy Gopperth, once by Aaron Cruden, seven times by Beauden Barrett, four times by brother Jordie and once by Brett Cameron. And, of course, once by Love.

Ruben Love has now scored 228 points for the Hurricanes which includes 54 against the Brumbies: the most he has against any one side.

In this match Love did something only two others have achieved for the Hurricanes: he kicked nine conversions (and a penalty). In 2012  Beauden Barrett also kicked nine conversions (and a penalty) against the Rebels as did Otere Black against the Sunwolves in 2017, but he did not kick any penalties. Both Love and Barrett had the perfect kicking game (10 out of 10) whereas Black was successful in only nine of his 13 attempts at converting tries.

Ruben Love is poised to take a record off Beauden Barrett which has stood for 10 years. So far this season Love has kicked 48 conversions, now just two short of the 50 Barrett kicked in 2016.

Ruben loving it.

Jordie Barrett made his 50th start at Westpac/Sky/Hnry Stadium. This total includes the non-Super Rugby match against the British & Irish Lions in 2017.

Josh Moorby, who started, remains one of only three players who have missed just one match this year. Th other two are Brayden Iose and Xavier Numia. Unlike them though Moorby has started in all 14 of his matche and has accumulated 1096 minutes of playing time, well ahead of Bill Proctor who has spent 925 minutes on the field.

Peter Lakai played in his 49th Super Rugby match and will probably bring up his 50th in the Semi-Final.

Already this season six players have reached the 50 match milestone. In order they have been Cameron Roigard, Ruben Love, Caleb Delany, Pasilio Tosi, Josh Moorby and Bailyn Sullivan.

On the other hand Brad Shields appeared in his 141st match for the Hurricanes to put him into third place alongside Dane Coles for most matches played for the franchise. One of Shields’ matches was against the British & Irish Lions in 2017. TJ Perenara still holds the record for most matches played: 163.

For the Brumbies Corey Toole scored his third try against the Hurricanes. He had also scored in Round 11 plus an earlier one in 2023.

Tane Edmed scored his first try against the Hurricanes. With the seven points he had kicked for his old team the Waratahs and his conversion in Round 11 this year, his total against the Hurricanes is 14 points.

Ryan Lonergan kicked a conversion (he also scored a try in 2021) and has a total of seven points against the Hurricanes. The two points in this match took his tally in 2026 to 107 which placed him in top-equal position with Ruben Love for most points scored this season. (Subsequently, Damian McKenzie brought up 100 points for the Chiefs in their Qualifying Final match against the Reds and went to the top of the table with 121 points).

Dr Ben O’Keeffe refereed his fourth match involving the Hurricanes this year and 19th overall. It was the first time he has been in charge of a Hurricanes/Brumbies match. The Hurricanes have won 10 and lost nine matches when O’Keeffe has had the whistle.

The Hurricanes have played 437 Super Rugby matches. They have won 255 (58.4%), lost 175 and drawn seven.

The Brumbies have played 448 Super Rugby matches for 265 wins (59.2%), 178 losses and five draws.

The Hurricanes have progressed to the next level, a Semi-Final against the Blues at Hnry Stadium on Saturday.
