Matchday Scoring Highlights: Wainuiomata (48) v Northern United (31)

Wainuiomata pulled away from Northern United in the second half to win well, to take home the Alf Keating Memorial Trophy, on Old Timers’ Day at Porirua Park.

Norths had led 19-14 at halftime, through tries to flanker Ethan Lepou and lock Taniela Tuangalu whilst Wainuiomata No. 8 and earlier try scorer Emmanuel Solomona was in the sin-bin.

Right wing Ray Va’a had scored the visitors’ first try and his run up the far side helped set up an equaliser to tighthead prop Daniel Fiso running in good support.

Evergreen flanker Faifili Levave (see his name on the teamsheet below) scored to put Norths back in front, followed by Wainuiomata lock Matt Jacobs crossing in his 150th Premier game.

From there, Wainuiomata pulled clear to make it 40-26. Norths scored again through replacement wing Rico Poutama, but a second try of the second half to flanker Braydon Soi and a late Solmonona penalty sealed victory.

Northern United v Wainuiomata Flashback match

Who can forget the early season fixture in 2007 when Wainuiomata beat Northern United 30-29 at Porirua Park, with Piri Weepu leading the way at first-five and kicking a bunch of penalties for the newly promoted side to beat the previous year’s Jubilee Cup champions.
