Four-team shootout in second and final women’s sevens series tournament

The second and concluding WRFU women’s 7s tournament is scheduled to be played at Rugby League Park tomorrow.

The scheduled field has been reduced from six to four teams, with last week’s entrants Oriental-Rongotai and the Wellington Axemen falling off the pace and leaving Petone, Avalon, Old Boys University and Pōneke to don their club colours for the final time in 2026.

Having won last week’s series opener, the Petone Ponies are in the box seat to take out the Eleanor Roosevelt Cup.

The two tournaments are being run as separate events, but the points are combined and the series winner is crowned by combining results from the first two weekends.

Petone beat Old Boys University 34-5 in last week’s final, so if roles are reversed this week and OBU beat Petone then the points will be tied and the winner will be decided on a tiebreaker (to be confirmed what that is).

With four teams, the tournament is short and sharp with three rounds of matches between10.00am and 12.40pm, then semi-finals between 1.00pm-1.40pm and then the 3 v 4 match and final between 2.00pm-2.40pm.

Meanwhile, a selection of Wellington players will be contesting this weekend’s Ignite 7s tournament at Mt Maunganui, featuring teams from New Zealand, Samoa and Fiji.

The tournament is being streamed on the Australian Kayo Sports Channel, which means you need a paid subscription to watch, so unsure how that works, who would pay for that if not already a subscriber, or what kind of consistency the NZRU are looking for with broadcasting their own events.

Men’s players from Wellington involved are Cameron Burgess and Sione Halalilo.

Women’s players include Baylee Meroiti, Te Arani Vulu, Melania Paraone, Ana Puleiata, Keira Su’a Smith, Litia Bulicakau and Phoebe Edwards, Fia Laikong and Nia Sutherland.
