Matchday scoring updates: Oriental-Rongotai (28) v Paremata-Plimmerton (28)

Visitors Oriental-Rongotai beat Paremata-Plimmerton in a hard fought fixture in windy conditions at Ngati Toa Domain on Saturday in their opening match of the championship rounds in Wellington.

This was the first round of the 2026 Jubilee Cup and was between sixth placed qualifier Paremata-Plimmerton and seventh Oriental-Rongotai. This meant that, while the winner would progress to round two of the Jubilee Cup, the vanquished side would drop down to the Hardham VC Memorial Cup from the next round.

Oriental-Rongotai essentially won the match early, creating and scoring two converted tries to go 14-0 up whilst playing into the wind. The home side replied with a try off a cross-kick but Ories scored their third try to go 21-5 up approaching halftime. A penalty on halftime made it 21-8.

Now with the wind, Paremata-Plimmerton scored their second try, albeit a breakout against the run of play. This was scored by wing Louis Northcott, his second for the afternoon and 14th for the season.

Ories resumed attacking and soon scored their fourth and match-winning try a few phases after a scrum close to the line. There was still plenty of time remaining as Paremata-Plimmerton created plenty of moments where they could have come back but they lacked penetration. They finally scored towards the end on the dying embers of our camera battery #1 but it was too late (for cameraman and home team).

In the next round, Oriental-Rongotai are scheduled to play Tawa at Lyndhurst Park in a quarter-final knockout Jubilee Cup match, while Paremata-Plimmerton are scheduled to face Northern United at home in Round 2 of the Hardham VC Memorial Cup.
