Five Wellington schools are joining some 80 others from around the country at Blake Park, Mt Maunganui this weekend for the annual Condor 7s tournament.
St Patrick’s College Silverstream’s U15 Boys team is joined in the tournament by the Hutt International Boys’ School’s and Scots College’s Open Boys teams and the St Mary’s College’s and Wellington East Girls’ College’s Open Girls teams.
St Pat’s Silverstream are first up in their U15 tournament, which runs on Thursday and Friday. They are straight into action on the opening day with Pool matches are against Mt Albert Grammar School, New Plymouth BHS, Otumoetai College, Shirley BHS and Mt Maunganui College.
The Open Boys and Girls tournament kicks off on Saturday with pool play and continues on Sunday with the Cup, Plate and Bowl quarter finals, semi finals and finals.
Of the Wellington teams heading into action, just St Mary’s College have tasted tournament winning success previously, and that was in 2016 at the former venue of Sacred Heart College, Auckland. Eight years on they will like nothing more than to recapture the coveted trophy, but will face stiff competition from the likes of defending champions Howick College and their Manawatu rivals Manukura.
St Mary’s were seventh last year, with Wellington’s other representative last season Sacred Heart College semi-finalists.
St Mary’s will line up in Pool D alongside Hamilton Girls’ High School, Mt Albert Grammar School, Rosehill College and hometown hopefuls Mt Maunganui College.
Wellington East Girls’ College are in Pool B, alongside defending champions Howick, St Mary’s College (Auckland) and a pair of South Island contenders, Dunedin’s St Hilda’s Collegiate and Christchurch’s St Andrew’s College.
With 19 Open Girls teams entered, there are 28 Open Boys contenders.
Scots College have gone close before at Condors, but have been unable to take the silverware. Scots start the tournament in Pool G alongside Sacred Heart College, King’s High School and new Wellington competition school Rathkeale College.
HIBS were deserved Wellington Condors tournament winners just over a month ago. They will be somewhat of an unknown side for the other teams they are up against in Pool E, alongside powerhouses Hamilton BHS, James Cook High School and a likely similar styled team to themselves, Christchurch BHS.
Rotorua BHS are the defending Open Boys champions, having beaten Feilding High School 17-12 in the final. Prior to that Hamilton BHS had a mortgage on the title, winning the previous six going back to 2016 (no tournament in 2020 or 2021).
