Pre-season club rugby and Hurricanes teams at home

Wainuiomata and Poneke met last Saturday and both are having internal camps this weekend. But 10 of Wellington’s Premier squads are in action in pre-season games tomorrow. PHOTO T-Paul Gale.

The Hurricanes open up this weekend’s rugby with their match tonight at Wellington Stadium, which clears the decks for a full day of club rugby pre-season fixtures throughout the lower North Island.

With a fortnight to play until the start of Premier club rugby competitions, clubs are stepping up their pre-season preparations this weekend. Some are in internal camps, while others are playing live matches against like-minded opposition looking to fine-tune their preparations ahead of their assaults on titles.

There are four noted inter-squad pre-season venues tomorrow afternoon in Wellington.

Starting in the eastern suburbs, Oriental-Rongotai and Paremata-Plimmerton meet at Rongotai College at time TBC.

Marist St Pat’s are at home at Evans Bay Park for the first time this year, hosting the Avalon Wolves there at 11.00am.

Tawa welcome Hutt Old Boys Marist on to Lyndhurst Park, starting at 12.30pm with the Premier 2 squads and then  1.45pm for the Premiers. Prior to those matches, the Tawa College and HVHS school squads play there at 10.30am.

The Upper Hutt Rams and last year’s Jubilee Cup champions Northern United meet in Premier 2 and Premier matches at Maidstone Park at 11.30am and 1.30pm respectively. The Rams and Norths Colts squad also play at Maidstone, kick-off 11.30am.

Also in Upper Hutt, the Waikanae and Martinborough squads meet in the middle at the NZCIS ground from 1.00pm.

The OBU Green Colts and Wellington College meet for the Letica Cup, after the former Wellington College forward who became a Junior All Black in 1966 and was destined for a long career with his club Wellington College Old Boys and the Wellington representative team before sadly dying of leukaemia in 1967.

There are three matches at Petone’s North Park. The action there starts at 11.30am with the Petone and Hutt Old Boys Marist Colts, followed by Petone and HOBM’s U85kgs at 1.00pm and the Petone and Wainuiomata Premier 2 squads at 2.30pm.

The Petone Premiers play the Central Hawke’s Bay club at neutral Gladstone RFC in Masterton. Former Petone fullback Sam McNicol is Central’s Head Coach, hence the connection between the clubs for this match.

Johnsonville are down the road playing 2022 Wairarapa-Bush champions Carterton.

In Palmerston North, the mixed OBU Premier and Premier Reserve squads are playing against Massey University. The first match is against Freyberg Bs at 1.00pm and the second is against Massey Premiers/Senior A at 2.30pm.

Amongst other Wellington clubs, the Wainuiomata, Poneke and Wellington Axemen Premier squads have internal camps.

The PN College Old Boys Colts play the Hutt Old Boys Marist Colts at Queen Elizabeth College at 3.00pm, while the College Old Boys Senior squad travels to Greytown for their pre-season fixture.

In a double header at Rongotea, the Te Kawau Colts host the Feilding Yellows Colts at 12.30pm and the Te Kawau Seniors host Taranaki’s Coastal Seniors at 2.00pm.

Kia Toa head to Napier to play Napier Old Boys Marist.

In Shannon, the home club and Levin Athletic meet tonight at the Shannon Domain at 7.00pm.

Down on the Kapiti Coast, Rahui host the Freyberg Senior As in Otaki at 2.30pm.

The Hurricanes Poua are in North Harbour playing the Chiefs at 6.05pm in the second of two Super Rugby Aupiki semi-finals.

The Hurricanes U20s opened their account in the Super Rugby U20s competition in Taupo on Sunday.

Their competition opener is against Moana Pasifika at 12.55pm on Sunday, followed by matches next Wednesday (semi-finals) and Sunday (finals).
