Hurricanes v Moana Pasifika Stat Attack

Billy Proctor played in a winning Hurricanes side for the 50th time, from 78 appearances, in the Hurricanes’ win over Moana Pasifika on Saturday.

In association with Hurricanes statistics compiler Peter Marriott, the Stat Attack returns in 2026. Facts and figures from the Hurricanes’ win over the Crusaders in Wellington on Friday night below.

Round 13 v Moana Pasifika: Won 50-17

Moana Pasifika became the first side the Hurricanes have played twice this year. Their first meeting was in Round 2 after the Hurricanes had had a bye in the opening round.

The two sides have now met on nine occasions: the Hurricanes have won seven times to Moana Pasifika’s twice. Moana Pasifika’s first-ever Super Rugby win was actually against the Hurricanes in their third-ever match in 2022.

Moana Pasifika has hosted the Hurricanes four times and the record is even: two wins apiece.

Apart from the first match at Mount Smart Stadium in 2022 when the scores were locked at 7-7 at halftime, the Hurricanes have been on 19 points after 40 minutes in all three of the following away games.

Before this match Moana Pasifika issued their challenge: the Tau Moana.

The Hurricanes scored 50 points or more in a match for the 29th time which includes exactly 50 points on six occasions.

This was the fifth time the Hurricanes have reached a half-century of points in 2026 and this is a new Super Rugby record for the most times this has been achieved in a season.

The Hurricanes previously shared the record of four times in a season with the Crusaders (2005), the Bulls (2010), the Chiefs (2016), the Hurricanes themselves (2017) and the Waratahs (2018). This year the Hurricanes have scored (in order) 52 points against Moana Pasifika, 59 against the Waratahs, 50 against the Highlanders, 52 against the Reds and 50 against Moana Pasifika. They have also twice scored in the 40s.

Moana Pasifika scored 17 points: the 20th time the Hurricanes have conceded that number of points. They have also conceded 18 and 20 points on 20 occasions but their record for most points scored against them is 19, which has happened 34 times.

The Hurricanes made seven changes to their starting line-up from the previous match against the Crusaders.

After making none in the back-line in the last four matches this time there were three, and four in the forwards.

The 15 players who started the match had a combined total of 782 Super Rugby caps between them (536 in the forwards and 246 in the backs). The reserves bench boasted a total of 289 caps.

The Hurricanes remain at the top of the Standings for the second week in a row. They have 45 points and are five clear of the Chiefs who are in second place.

The Hurricanes dominance continues in terms of having scored the most tries (70), conceded the fewest (29), scored the most points (456) and conceded the fewest (199). On top of that they can boast as having the two top try scorers.

The Hurricanes have scored 70 or more tries in six different seasons: 72 in 2016, 97 in 2017, 72 in 2018, 73 in 2023, 80 in 2024 and now 70 in 2026.

Thirty-eight of those Hurricanes 70 tries have been scored in six matches played away from home. This has only been bettered by the 43 they scored in nine away matches in 2017.

Josh Moorby scored the Hurricanes first try and went on to score three more and thus become the fifth player to score four tries in a match for the franchise. The previous four instances were by Ben Lam (against the Rebels at Melbourne in 2018), Ngani Laumape (against the Blues at Wellington in 2018), Bailyn Sullivan (against the Chiefs at Wellington in 2025) and Fehi Fineanganofo (against the Brumbies at Christchurch in 2026).

The Hurricanes had to wait until their 303rd Super Rugby match for Lam to score his four tries but just another 10 for Laumape to join him. Then there was a gap of 105 matches before Sullivan became the third player to repeat the feat. Fineanganofo followed 13 matches later (Match #431) and now Moorby has joined the “club” just two matches after his current teammate.

Lam and Fineanganofo wore jersey #11 when they scored their tries, whilst Laumape and Moorby wore jerseys #12 and #14 respectively. Sullivan, however, wore jersey #23 but admittedly took the field in the seventh minute when he replaced an injured Kini Naholo.

Moorby now has 33 tries in 49 appearances for the Hurricanes, including a record nine against Moana Pasifika.

His first was scored on debut at Mount Smart Stadium in 2022 followed by a second at the same venue the following year. He scored a hat-trick at Wellington in the Hurricanes first match this year.

Moorby’s overall record includes two tries in a match four times, two times three, and now one four.

Moorby has scored 12 tries in 2026 second only to Fehi Fineanganofo (15) who incidentally failed in this match to add to his total and either equal the Super Rugby record for most tries by an individual in a season or establish a new record for himself.

Josh Moorby is still the only Hurricanes player to have been on the field for every minute played: 885.

Du’Plessis Kirifi scored his 14th try in his 102nd match. It was his first against Moana Pasifika. Kirifi captained the side for the first time on his own: he had previously been an on-field co-captain on 20 occasions.

Kini Naholo returned to play his first match of the season and scored two tries. He went on as a replacement in the 52nd minute and five minutes later he scored his first try. His second was scored just one minute after that.

Naholo had missed the Hurricanes previous 14 matches owing to the early injury he sustained in the match against the Chiefs last year. His try total in 33 matches is 23 including five against Moana Pasifika. Naholo is another “serial” try scorer having now scored two tries in a match five times. He has also scored a hat-trick: against the Waratahs last year.

Jone Rova was the fourth try scorer. It was his fourth in 10 matches for the Hurricanes. This was only his second start for the team and first in the #12 jersey.

Callum Harkin was on kicking duties and converted five of the eight tries scored. He now has 41 points in 20 matches.

Jordi Viljoen appeared in his second match this season, both have been off the bench. He has only played seven times for the Hurricanes since making his debut, in his only start, against the Force at Perth in 2024. He scored a try. Viljoen has yet to taste defeat in the Hurricanes jersey.

Billy Proctor played in a winning Hurricanes side for the 50th time, from 78 appearances. He has not lost any of his five matches against Moana Pasifika.

Ereatara Enari made his second start this season but only his third in 22 matches for the Hurricanes. All three of his starts have been against Moana Pasifika.

Lucas Cashmore made his first start (at #10) in his fourth match for the Hurricanes.

Vernon Bason made his first start (at #2) in his third match for the Hurricanes.

Tuna Tuitama scored two tries to go with the one he scored in Round 2. His three tries equal the Moana Pasifika record for most tries scored by an individual against the Hurricanes. His captain, Miracle Faiilagi scored a hat-trick at Albany in 2025, the last time Moana Pasifika beat the Hurricanes.

Israel Leota scored his first try against the Hurricanes.

Jackson Garden-Bachop kicked a conversion for his first points against the Hurricanes. Garden-Bachop had previously played 31 times for the Hurricanes between 2018 and 2022.

Angus Mabey was in charge of his second Hurricanes match this year and fourth overall. It was his first Hurricanes/ Moana Pasifika match.

The Hurricanes have played 433 Super Rugby matches. They have won 252 (58.2%), lost 174 and drawn seven.

Moana Pasifika have played 68 Super Rugby matches for 14 wins, 54 losses and no draws.

After having won their opening match of the season against Fijian Drua, Moana Pasifika have lost their last 11 matches on the trot. They have a bye in the next round followed by a home game against the Reds and an away match against the Brumbies to finish their season. Losses in those two matches will mean Moana Pasifika will equal their record for most consecutive losses in a season: in 2023 they lost the first 13 matches before winning their final outing against the Waratahs.

I trust Moana Pasifika will find a last-minute solution to their financial problems and be a part of Super Rugby in 2027 and beyond.
