Hurricanes v Brumbies Stat Attack

Fehi Fineanganofo (above) carried on with his try scoring habit becoming just the fourth Hurricanes player to score four tries in a Super Rugby match. The previous instances were by Ben Lam (against the Rebels at Melbourne in 2018), Ngani Laumape (against the Blues at Wellington in 2018, 10 matches after Lam) and Bailyn Sullivan (against the Chiefs at Wellington in 2025, 13 matches before Fineanganofo).

Fineanganofo has now scored 20 tries in just 21 appearances for the Hurricanes.

In Round 6 (against the Highlanders) and Round 7 (against the Reds) Fineanganofo scored hat-tricks and he has become the first player in Super Rugby history to score three or more tries in a match three times during the same season. His overall record also includes two tries in a match on three occasions.

Fehi Fineanganofo’s first three tries were scored in 31 minutes which is quick but well short of the time it took Madosh Tambwe to score his hattrick for the Lions against the Stormers at Johannesburg in 2018. He scored his in a record 13 minutes and a fourth 38 minutes later. Fineanganofo’s four tries were also scored over a period of 51 minutes.

Round 11 v Brumbies: Won 45-12

This round was labelled the Super and ANZAC Weekend Round where 10 teams (the Force had a bye) all played at the newly completed Christchurch venue, One NZ Stadium. A total of five matches were played over three days of competition.

The Hurricanes and the Brumbies have now met 35 times: 15 wins to the Hurricanes and 20 to the Brumbies.

There have been no draws although two matches have been decided by a margin of one point.

Fourteen of those 35 matches have been played in New Zealand. The Hurricanes have won nine times to the Brumbies five.

The Hurricanes extended their record run against the Brumbies in New Zealand to five wins in a row. The Brumbies have not won since the match at Wellington on 7 March 2014 when they prevailed 29-21.

In fact the Hurricanes have now won their last 23 matches in New Zealand against all Australian sides.

This sequence began straight after their 24-29 loss to the Waratahs at Wellington in 2015. Since that match the Hurricanes have gone on to beat the Rebels six times, the Brumbies five times, the Force four times, the Reds four times and the Waratahs four times. Fifteen of those victories have been at the Westpac/Sky/Hnry Stadium, four in Palmerston North, three in Napier and one at the new One NZ Stadium.

Before this match both the Hurricanes and the Brumbies had beaten all of their other Australian and New Zealand opposition sides respectively and so one of them was going to perform the clean sweep. In the case of the Hurricanes they “only” had to beat four sides whilst the Brumbies had to beat five.

The Hurricanes had performed the clean sweep on three previous occasions: in 2005, when Australia only ha three teams in the competition, and in 2017 and 2023 when they had five teams.

A new trophy, the Captain Shout Cup, was established last year to honour New Zealand born Alfred “Whisper” Shout who showed great courage on several occasions during the campaign in Gallipoli. He was posthumously awarded a Victoria Cross. The cup is played for on an annual basis between the Brumbies and the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes won it last year and so have retained it.

This was the third match the Hurricanes have actually played on ANZAC day and all have been against the

Brumbies. The first was in 1999 at the old Athletic Park where the Brumbies won 21-13. The second was at the then named Westpac Stadium in 2009 when the hosts won 56-7.

The match in Christchurch was the first one played by the Hurricanes and Brumbies at a neutral venue. Previous

The Hurricanes have scored 40 points or more on six occasions this season to equal their record set in 2017 and repeated in 2024. In 2017 they had two scores in the 40s and one each in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. In

2024 they had five in the 40s and one in the 50s. This year there have been two in the 40’s and four in the 50s.
