Rugby starts this weekend in Wellington

The Northern United and Wainuiomata squads are playing at Mana College in their first matches of the new season tomorrow. 

Updated: Three Hurricanes teams playing and some pre-season club rugby is what is in store tomorrow in the Wellington region.

Including tomorrow, there are five weekends remaining until the start of the Premier and Premier 2 club competitions in Wellington, the home of the Swindale Shield and Jubilee Cup trophies and the current residence of the National Championship title.

The Hutt Old Boys Marist and Pōneke squads meet at neutral North Park, with the Colts playing at 12.00pm and the Premiers at 1.30pm.

The Northern United and Wainuiomata squads meet at Mana College, kick-off 1.00pm.

Marist St Pat’s welcome the Palmerston North Old Boys Marist and Freyberg clubs from the Manawatu competitions on to Evans Bay Park. The MSP women mark their return to action after a year off by hosting the PNOBM women at 12.00pm and then MSP and the Freyberg  Johnsonville men’s teams step out at 1.00pm.

Through the cutting, the Wellington Axemen play Hawke’s Bay side Clive at Rongotai College, kick-off 1.00pm.  Game now cancelled. 

The Upper Hutt Rams were scheduled to play Central Hawkes Bay on Saturday but the visitors can’t make the trip, so the Rams are going to be having an extra training session on Saturday at Maidstone Park.

In three fixtures involving Hurricanes teams, the Hurricanes U20s and the Crusaders U20s are in action at the NZCIS facility at the early kick-off time of 11.30am.

This is gearing up to the Super Rugby U20s tournament from 12-23 March in Taupo, where the Hurricanes U20s will play the Fijian Drua in their opening game.

There are two matches at Wellington Stadium, with the Hurricanes Poua Women’s side opening their Super Rugby Aupiki campaign against the Blues at 4.35pm and the Hurricanes Men’s outfit playing the Blues Men at 7.05pm
