HIBS win Open Boys Condors, St Mary’s defend both girls titles, Silverstream U15 boys winners

 – By Steven White

It’s HIBS.

Hutt International Boys’ School are the 2024 Open Boys Condor Sevens champions.

HIBS won the Christian Cullen Cup for the first time with a resounding 19-17 win over last year’s winners Scots College in the final under leaden skies and on a wet field following earlier heavy rain at Naenae College on Labour Day Monday.

St Mary’s College maintained their steely grip on the Open Girls title, the defending champions beating Wellington East Girls’ College 47-0 in the Kat Simkins Cup final.

The St Mary’s U15s side beat Aotea College 28-19 in their final to also defend their title.

The Boys U15 final was won by St Pat’s Silverstream, Silverstream beating St Bernard’s College 26-24 in their decider.

The day belonged to HIBS, who played with relentless positivity throughout the day. A key victory for them was in the final round of Pool matches.

There were two blockbuster pool matches side by side later in the morning – with HIBS beating Wellington College 17-14 on number one and St Pat’s Silverstream overcoming Tawa College 22-0 on field 2.

HIBS then defeated Tawa College 21-12 in their quarter-final and then took down Silverstream 24-21 in their semi-final.

On to the final and HIBS opened the scoring to go 7-0 up. Scots replied, but HIBS went in again. Scots replied again and HIBS lead 14-10 at halftime.

HIBS captain and halfback Sean Carter was our tournament MVP and he played a star turn in the final. After scoring one of those first half tries, Carter scored again to put his side up 19-10.

He then turned punishing attack into big defence, making a try saving tackle on Scots’ Brandon Lo.

Scots were kept out again twice, including George White making another big turnover inside HIBS’ 22. Scots finally scored through halfback and captain Jake Lawson to cut the score to 19-17. HIBS held on and Carter kicked the ball far and wide on referee Harris’ fulltime whistle.

U18 Girls champions St Mary’s scored seven tries in their final win over WEGC, to complete another unbeaten tournament.

The Thorndon school had eased into the semi-finals by default as Taita College went down with injuries. WEGC had beaten Sacred Heart College 22-5 in their semi-final, after leading three tries to nil at halftime.

St Mary’s had earlier wins over Tawa College (48-0), St Catherine’s (47-7) and Wellington East Girls’ College (33-5).

All four boys and girls finalists teams have qualified for December’s National Condor 7s tournament.

Some more from the game below.

Play kicked off at the Lower Hutt learning establishment at 9.00am across four fields.

Conditions for the start were bright and the sunshine beamed through the clouds.

This wasn’t to last long, showers arrived and some of these became torrential by mid-morning.

Despite the now treacherous conditions, many teams played their cards early and they were fast and loose.

Open Boys title aspirants Wellington College, St Pat’s Silverstream and Scots College opened up with wins, Rongotai College were decked out in bright yellow, while Tawa College warmed up in pink but were full of running in familiar colours in their first match almost an hour later. St Pat’s Town stayed at home.

There were no upsets or marked results to speak of in the early rounds, except if you count St Pat’s Silverstream B’s early win over St Bernard’s College.

HVHS beating Rongotai College 24-14 was also a notable result of the pool play.

On to the Cup quarterfinals in clearing whether, Hutt Valley High School beat St Bernard’s 35-22, Scots beat Rongotai 17-12, Silverstream A beat Wellington College 12-5 and HIBS beat Tawa 21-12.

Defending U15 champions Hutt Valley High School were late to their final pool game of the morning, losing to St Bernard’s 85-5 and ending their chances. Silverstream were well-deserved champions, to go with their U15s 15 rugby title win earlier this year.

Defending champions St Mary’s cruised into the U15s Cup final, courtesy of wins over Tawa College (48-0), St Catherine’s (47-7) and Wellington East Girls’ College (33-5).
