The Hurricanes met the Sydneysiders in Wellington this past Friday night, resuming their winning ways. Some facts and figures from that fixture by Peter Marriott below.

Week 11 v Waratahs: Won 41-12

The Hurricanes and the Waratahs have now met on 27 occasions. The Hurricanes have won 17 matches to the Waratahs 10. There have been no draws.

The Hurricanes have won their last seven matches in a row against the Waratahs.

In the 27 matches played between the two sides, the Hurricanes have aggregated 735 points and the Waratahs 665 points for a combined total of exactly 1400 points.

The Hurricanes have now won their last 18 matches played against Australian sides in New Zealand. Those wins are against the Rebels (five times), Brumbies (four), Force, Reds and Waratahs (three each).

The Waratahs were the last Australian side to beat the Hurricanes at home in New Zealand. The venue was the then-named Westpac Stadium and the date was 18 April 2015. The score was Waratahs 29, Hurricanes 24.

The Hurricanes remain at the top of the Standings for the fourth week in succession.

Before the match started, there was a moments silence for Cory Heather who had died following an injury received in a rugby match at Beachlands the previous weekend.

The Hurricanes made 10 changes to their starting line-up from the fifteen who started in last week’s match against the Brumbies. There were five changes in the backs and five in the forwards.

The Waratahs were kept scoreless (0-26) at halftime. This was the fourth time the Hurricanes have done this to their opposition in 2024: previously 22-0 against the Force in Perth, 7-0 against the Crusaders in Christchurch and 26-0 against the Highlanders in Dunedin.

The Hurricanes brought up their 50th try for the season in this match. They were the first side in 2024 to reach this milestone and it is the 12th year in which they have scored 50 or more tries. Their total so far this year is53: one more than the 52 scored by the Blues and the Chiefs.

The Hurricanes have scored more tries in the first quarter (16), the second quarter (14) and the fourth quarter(14) of a match, than any of the other 11 Super Rugby sides.

The Hurricanes 50th try was scored by Brayden Iose.

The Hurricanes third try, scored by Josh Moorby, was the 400th try to be scored in Super Rugby this year.

After 10 outings so far this season, Pasilio Tosi is the only remaining Hurricanes player who has appeared in every match.

A total of 40 players have made at least one appearance for the Hurricanes this year. Forty players were used during the whole of last year’s campaign.

Ben Grant was awarded an on-field try for the Hurricanes by the referee Dan Waenga in the 55th minute.

However, it was disallowed by the TMO Richard Kelly who ruled the player knocked the ball on. It would have been Grant’s maiden Super Rugby try.

Billy Proctor was appointed the Hurricanes captain for the match. Earlier in the season he had been co-captain with Asafo Aumua on two occasions. This was Proctor’s first time in charge on his own.

Billy Proctor scored the first try of the match, in the third minute. This was the “quickest” try for the Hurricanes this season and it was the second time in 2024 he has scored the first try for his side. Proctor also scored two tries against the Waratahs in 2021. Billy Proctor has now scored 16 tries in 57 appearances.

Josh Moorby scored his 19th try in his 33rd match.

Brayden Iose scored his ninth try in his 34th match for the Hurricanes. He had previously scored a try against the Waratahs in 2021.

Salesi Rayasi scored his 26th and 27th tries in this his 47th match. This was the eighth time, and second occasion this season, he has scored two or more tries in the same match. They were his first tries against the Waratahs.

In a record extending 158th appearance for the Hurricanes, TJ Perenara scored his 63rd try to move into first place on the all-time Super Rugby list of try scorers. He had been level on 62 tries with former Hurricanes player Julian Savea since scoring twice against the Chiefs some three matches prior to this one.

Despite scoring all of those tries, Perenara had only scored once before against the Waratahs: in 2015.

Coincidentally, that match against the Waratahs was significant in that the Hurricanes lost which brought an end to their then record of having won their first seven matches of the season.

TJ Perenara’s try also happened to be the 50th scored by a Hurricanes player against the Waratahs in a match played at a home venue.

Brett Cameron scored his second try (both for the Hurricanes) in his 28th Super Rugby match. He also kicked three conversions to give him 11 points in the match. His first conversion brought up 100 points for the Hurricanes and his total for the franchise now sits on 110. Cameron also kicked 19 points when he played 13 times for the Crusaders between 2018 and 2020.

Richard Judd made just his fourth start in his 17 appearances for the Hurricanes since making his debut in 2018. He has partnered with three different First Five-eighths in those four starts: Beauden Barrett twice and once with Ruben Love and Brett Cameron.

Kianu Kereru-Symes made his first appearance of the season having last played for the Hurricanes in 2022.

He was called in as a replacement as both incumbent starting hookers were unavailable due to injury. Kereru-Symes had made his debut against Moana Pasifika at Wellington in 2022 scoring a try. He played one more match that season.

Vuate Karawalevu scored a try for the Waratahs on debut.

Hugh Sinclair scored his first try against the Hurricanes.

Tane Edmed scored two points to add to the five he kicked against the Hurricanes in 2022.

Overall, the Hurricanes have now played 401 Super Rugby matches. They have won 231 (57.6%), lost 164 and drawn six.
