It’s back.
Rugby returns to the Wellington region on Saturday with the third annual Bula Fiji 7s tournament being played from morning to evening.
Some 12 men’s teams are scheduled to participate in the high-energy 7s carnival down on Jerry Collins Stadium to usher in the fresh season of rugby in 2024.
Several crack squads from around the country will start the day with pool play from 9.00am to 1.00pm approximately, followed by a one hour break to cool their jets and then with the knockout rugby starting after that. The Cup Final is slated to go at 6.00pm.
The local Wellington Fijian Flyers are entering two teams as they try and defend the title they won last year (the All Black Sevens squad won the inaugural tournament in 2022), with several teams from around the country from places such as Gisborne and Mid Canterbury and points in between laying down their challenges.
The Whanganui Fijians could be considered amongst the favourites, having won the most recent tournament, the Manawatu Fiji 7s in Palmerston North in early December.
Entry to watch the tournament is $5, with food stalls operating all day.
After a week of warm weather, in the north of the region at least, conditions are forecast to cool marginally for Saturday’s tournament. But down at ground level temperatures are expected to remain red-hot all day.
