The two teams met at Rugby League Park, Newtown, on Saturday.
Wellington won 9 tries to 3, after leading 17-7 at halftime, in fine clear conditions.
The match was well-contested at the breakdown, but Wellington had a clear advantage up front and at scrum time. That and two separate sin-binnings to Hawke’s Bay players, allowed the gap to open up in Wellington’s favour as the second half unfolded.
Wellington scored two quickfire tries in the 48th and 52nd minutes to extend their halftime lead to 31-7. Hawke’s Bay made a brief comeback, but Wellington pulled away in the last 15 minutes to complete their win.
This coming weekend, the Wellington Centurions meet Tasman B in Blenheim in the final match of their 2023 campaign.
