Bishop Viard College win Beard Trophy (plus scoring highlights)

Bishop Viard College won the Beard Trophy off Mana College at Porirua Park on Wednesday night.

In front of a rowdy and engaged crowd at Jerry Collins Stadium, Bishop Viard College won 29-24.

It was a game of two halves.

With the wind at their backs and playing with passion and fervour that the Beard Trophy generates, Bishop Viard College stung Mana College with an early try following a Mana dropped ball from the opening kick-off.

With their tails up, Bishop Viard College ran in three more tries in succession to take a 22-0 lead over the holders. This then became 29-0 in the 25th minute with a try from a chargedown.

Mana regrouped just before halftime, but were denied a try by a committed piece of cover defence. This staunch defence continued into the second half as Mana did manage to put points on the board and came back to close the scores up to 19-29 with about five minutes to play. They scored again to make it 24-29, but the fulltime whistle sounded and Bishop Viard College started celebrating their win.

It was double success for Bishop Viard College, beating Mana College 42-5 and winning the inaugural girls Beard Trophy match.

This coming weekend, Bishop Viard host the Wellington College Second XV at home at 2.30pm in the Premier 2 Murray Jensen Cup, whilst Mana have the bye in the Premiership competition.
