The Monday Wrap 11 April (some news and information to start the week)

Two sets of three brothers in the Ories Premier line-up on Saturday. The Tuilaepa brothers, left to right Pose, Jay, Jordan and the Poasa brothers, left to right Penieli, Poasa, Peteli.

Lunch time edition: Covid issues aside, it’s a busy week coming up for rugby.

Starting on Tuesday night, the Hurricanes play their re-scheduled match against Moana Pasifika at Wellington Stadium.

Again, they don’t make it easy for supporters when scheduling matches, Tuesday night being training night for a few thousand rugby players around the region; ergo a few thousand fewer potential spectators through the turnstiles. A real shame as this return match against Moana Pasifika is one game that will draw plenty of interest.

The teams have been named:

Hurricanes: Ruben Love, Wes Goosen, Bailyn Sullivan, Peter Umaga-Jensen, Salesi Rayasi, Aidan Morgan, TJ Perenara; Devan Flanders, Blake Gibson, Reed Prinsep (c), Tom Parsons, Isaia Walker-Leawere, Tevita Mafileo, James O’Reilly, Alex Fidow. Reserves: Kianu Kereru-Symes, Jared Proffit, Pasilio Tosi, Justin Sangster, Te Kamaka Howden, Cam Roigard, Teihorangi Walden, Josh Moorby,

Moana Pasifika: Lolagi Visinia, Tima Fainga’anuku, Levi Aumua, Danny Toala, Neria Foma’i, Christian Leali’ifano (c), Jonathan Taumateine; Henry Time-Stowers, Alamanda Motuga, Alex McRobbie, Samuel Slade, Mahonri Ngakuru, Joe ‘Apikotoa, Samiuela Moli, Abraham Pole. Reserves: Ray Niuia, Ezekiel Lindenmuth, Taukiha’amea Koloamatangi, Michael Curry, Penitoa Finau, Manu Paea, Lincoln McClutchie, Henry Taefu.

On Wednesday there is a game of three halves match between the Mana College, Onslow College and Wanganui High School First XVs at Mana from midday. This is for the Carlos Spencer Cup, which was set up between these three schools and Spencer’s old School, Waiopehu College. But the latter school can’t make it this year, hence the game of three halves.

On Thursday night, we understand that the third round Swindale Shield match between the Old Boys University Billygoats and the Avalon Wolves is being brought forward from Saturday. Presumably owing to Easter. This will be slated for the Fraser Park Artificial under lights. Confirmation and match details to come.

On Friday, the St Pat’s Silverstream First and Second XVs are down to host the two Feilding High School teams, from 1.00pm. The Feilding First XV is coming off a 29-5 win over New Plymouth Boys’ High School on Saturday, so this should be a good game.

It is also the Good Friday round of Manawatu club rugby. Scheduled matches are: Old Boys Marist v Feilding,  Kia Toa v Te Kawau and College Old Boys v Freyberg. Varsity has the bye.

Moving into Saturday and it’s the remaining fixtures list of the third round of the Swindale Shield, the third round of the Women’s club rugby competition and more pre-season club rugby and college rugby games across various grades. Scheduled Swindale Shield matches on Saturday at a glance (home teams first): Norths v Poneke, Petone v Ories, Pare-Plim v HOBM, Tawa v Johnsonville, UHR v MSP, Wainuiomata v Wellington.

A 28 May start date for the Wellington First XV competition.

Three weeks of grading fixtures and Hurricanes First XV Festival matches then into it.

The last Wednesday of May is also the day that the St Pat’s Town v Wellington College traditional fixture is played, so clear your calendars for 25 May.

The Chiefs were held scoreless for the first time in 359 matches in their 25-0 loss to the Blues on Saturday night.

But the Chiefs were denied not one but three tries on the basis of what appeared to be three very marginal TMO calls. Perhaps if the Blues were just handed the competition points in advance and the boys could have gone off and played club rugby instead? Chase Tiatia (HOBM) and Naitoa Ah Kuoi (MSP) are two Chiefs players who could have played in the Swindale Shield.

Mike Fraser officiated his 200th first class match on Friday night when the Highlanders beat Moana Pasifika 37-17 in Super Rugby. Fraser is the fifth referee to reach 200 games. The record holder is Paddy O’Brien with 230 games.

Would Moana Pasifika have a positive points differential if the rolling maul didn’t exist?

Julian Savea kicked a 50/22 in the Hurricanes v Crusaders game. Daniel Carter didn’t do that in 1598 kicks this week! The Crusaders beat the Hurricanes for the first time in nine attempts when down at halftime

Ireland beat Fiji in Sevens for the first time, winning 21-12 in Singapore. They had met 10 times previously.

A note for Marist St Pat’s/St Pat’s Town – please move your Evans Bay Park scoreboard higher, or request spectators don’t stand in front of it?

Some words of encouragement for the Colts grade photographers on Saturday along the lines of keep it up as you are contributing to the next generation of players. How is that it was asked? Because many of the guys use their rugby pics in their Tinder profiles when looking to meet the young ladies! So if we can contribute in any way to the pool of players in the 2040s then that’s even better.

The March edition of the Rugby News is out, with former Hastings Boys’ High School halfback Folau Fakatava and former Feilding HS halfback Aaron Smith on the cover. Our contribution on page 68. Club Rugby’s Adam Julian, who will be found this week somewhere in the far north, has been working on some First XV previews for their upcoming College Rugby special.

Spotted on TV yesterday afternoon. Nick the ‘Hoganator’ Hogan, former 90-something match Wellington Premier referee officiating the knockout matches on Sunday afternoon of the Singapore 7s. South Africa was beaten 12-7 by the USA in the Singapore Sevens, snapping a 36 game win streak the second longest win streak World Sevens history. New Zealand, with 47 wins on the trot between 2007 and 2008, holds the record.

Fiji beat New Zealand 28-17 in the Cup final.

A record 14,689 people attended England’s 58-5 win over Wales in the Women’s Six Nations. England scored 10 tries in their 21st win in a row but lost gun fullback Abby Dow to a serious injury and were genuinely challenged at set-piece by the Welsh.

France beat Scotland 28-8 to maintain their unbeaten start to the Women’s Six Nations. France was ahead 28.3 at halftime but was held scoreless in the second-half. Halfback and 2021 World Rugby player of the year nominee Laure Sanus scored two tries but was replaced at the interval.

Just one Senior A [Premier] game in the Manawatu on Saturday, with Freyberg beating Kia Toa 36-19. The other matches between Varsity and Te Kawau and Feilding and College Old Boys were both postponed because of Covid, while Old Boys-Marist had the week off with the bye.

As noted above, the next round of MRU matches is scheduled for this coming Friday afternoon.
