Club and school Sevens tournaments cancelled for 2021

This Covid disease is something else.

Following the announcement earlier this week by College Sport Wellington that their tournaments have been cancelled, the WRFU has now moved to cancel all its sevens tournaments for 2021.

Three tournaments were scheduled; an age-grade and women’s tournament on 6 November, followed by the two American Ambassador’s series events on 13 and 20 November.

Both organisations are interested in feedback about running zonal sevens tournaments in early 2022. The WRFU has suggested February as a window for this. CSW has mooted March – as the National Condor 7s tournament has been put back to April next year and Wellington schools would need a chance to qualify for that.

WRFU updates (Thursday): Unfortunately, with the current Alert Level 2 restrictions in place at community sport events limiting gatherings to 100 people and participants, we have had to cancel our three scheduled Club Sevens tournaments for 2021. All tournaments would be over the gathering limits allowed for community sport under Alert Level 2.

We are currently exploring options for a club sevens window in February 2022 and will liaise with clubs and explore whether there is any interest to participate.

College Sport Wellington updates (Tuesday): Unfortunately, we have now had to cancel both the Wellington Secondary School Sevens Rugby Tournament (Condor Qualifier) and Rip Rugby Junior Tournament.  Both tournaments would be well over the gathering limits allowed for community sport under COVID-19 Alert Level 2.

Originally the Wellington Secondary School Sevens Rugby Tournament (Condor Qualifier) was only postponed.  However with no immediate plan to lower the current COVID-19 Alert Level 2 for Wellington, we have had made the hard decision to cancel.
