Round 7 v Crusaders: Lost 27-30

The Hurricanes record against the Crusaders is now played 41, won 13, lost 26 and drawn two.

The Hurricanes have lost their first three home matches of the season for the first time ever. Previously they had lost two out of the first three in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2011 and 2012. They have also lost three home games

in the same season but these were the last three in 1996. However, their worst run of consecutive losses at home has been four in a row, on two occasions: they lost the last three matches in 1996 and the first of 1997, and in 2013 when they lost the last three and the first match of 2014.

In all three home matches this year the Hurricanes never trailed at halftime: they were ahead 11-7 against the Blues, ahead 26-7 against the Chiefs and level 17-17 against the Crusaders.

The Hurricanes have lost their last three matches at home against the Crusaders. This is the first time they have lost three in a row although between 2006 and 2012 they lost two, drew one, and then lost again.

The Hurricanes have now lost nine home matches against the Crusaders. This is a new record for losses at home: one ahead of the eight lost against the Blues. The Hurricanes have actually lost 10 matches at home venues to the Crusaders: they also lost the match at Wellington in 2011 when the Crusaders called it their “home match” due to being unable to play in Christchurch because of the February earthquake.

The Hurricanes have now played 254 matches in New Zealand: they have won 149 and lost 99 (and drawn six).

The Hurricanes have lost five of their first six matches played this year. This has happened just once before: in 2011. They won their seventh match.

The Crusaders have become the first Super Rugby side to kick 100 penalties against the Hurricanes. The tally now stands at 101.

The match was decided by “Golden Point” which was due to both sides being level on points at the end of 80 minutes. This was just the second occasion this has happened in almost two years of Super Rugby Aotearoa, the first time being the day before in the match between the Highlanders and the Chiefs. In that match the Chiefs won with a penalty in the sixth minute of the 10 minutes of extra time whilst the Crusaders won with a drop goal (by David Havili) in the second minute of extra time. Amazingly this was the first drop goal kicked against the Hurricanes by anyone since Marty Banks was successful for the Highlanders in the Final played at Wellington in July 2015. It was also the first by a Crusaders player against the Hurricanes since Andy Ellis kicked one, also at Wellington, in June 2011. And, it was the first drop goal kicked in this year’s competition, after 1,122 minutes of play.

After seven rounds the Hurricanes have established a number of “bests” among the five sides. They have kicked the most penalties (14), conceded the fewest penalties (five), conceded the most tries (23) and conceded the most points (175).

In all home matches against the other sides, the Hurricanes have had 37 penalties kicked against them by the Blues and 38 by the Chiefs, the Crusaders and the Highlanders. That is a total of 151 penalties which just happens to be the same tally the Hurricanes have kicked in home matches against the other New Zealand sides.

The Hurricanes loss by three points is just the sixth time they have lost by that number of points, in 148 defeats.

After seven rounds Jordie Barrett is the top point scorer of Super Rugby Aotearoa with 75 points (three tries, nine conversions and 14 penalties. The Crusaders Richie Mo’unga is next with 71 points (two tries, 17 conversions and nine penalties).

Four Hurricanes players remain who have started in every match this year. They are Jordie Barrett, Ngani Laumape, Tyrel Lomax and Ardie Savea. Of the four Barrett has played the maximum number of minutes (482) followed by Laumape (456) and Ardie Savea (441). Jordie Barrett’s 75 points to date means he scores a point, on average, every 6.4 minutes.

Jordie Barrett kicked the first points of the match (a penalty) which meant he had scored 50 of the last 55 points accumulated by the Hurricanes.

Barrett made his 50th start for the Hurricanes at Fullback. This total includes the match against the British & Irish Lions in 2017.

Jordie Barrett has scored 76 points against the Crusaders: he is second on the list after brother Beauden who scored 99.

Barrett’s match haul of 12 points took his tally in all matches at Sky/Westpac Stadium to 205. He is the third player after Beauden (589 points) and David Holwell (226 points) to reach 200 points at this venue.

For all three Hurricanes try scorers it was their first try of the season. Julian Savea scored his sixth against the Crusaders (one short of the Hurricanes record of seven, held by Christian Cullen), and 53rd overall, Ngani Laumape scored his fourth against the Crusaders and 45th overall, and Wes Goosen scored his fifth against the Crusaders and 24th overall. Incidentally Savea’s last try for the Hurricanes had also been against the Crusaders: in the Semi-final at Christchurch on 28 July 2018.

Julian Savea’s try extended his Hurricanes record for most tries scored at Sky/Westpac Stadium to 28.

Cameron Roigard made his debut and becomes the 268th different player to make an appearance for the Hurricanes. He is the fourth new player this year and all of them are backs: two Halfbacks and two First Five-eighths. Roigard is also the second debutant this year (after Ruben Love) who was born this century. He was born on 16 November 2000 which made him 20 years and 146 days old on debut.

Ruben Love, in his second match, made his first start for the Hurricanes. He becomes the 21st player to start a Super Rugby match at First Five-eighth and just the second to do so in a match against the Crusaders, after Riki Flutey at Christchurch in 2003.

Cameron Roigard was on the field for the last 15 minutes of the match (including the extra time) as a replacement for Luke Campbell.

Outside him was Ruben Love (who played the entire 82 minutes) and so we had the unprecedented situation of the only two Hurricanes players born this century, combining with one another, for a quarter of an hour.

Luke Campbell, together with Ruben Love, became the 52nd different Halfback/First Five-eighth combination to start a Super Rugby match for the Hurricanes. It is also the third new combination in six matches this year and the fifth different combination in the last eight matches.
Ruben Love, as did debutant Cameron Roigard, played his first match against the Crusaders. A total of 208 different Hurricanes players have now made at least one appearance against the Crusaders.

Julian Savea appeared in his 16th match against the Crusaders to equal Ben May’s tally against them. However, they are both one short of TJ Perenara who played 17 times against the Crusaders.

The backrow trio of Reed Prinsep, Devan Flanders and Ardie Savea are the 107th different Flanker/No8/Flanker combination used by the Hurricanes in Super Rugby matches.

Alex Fidow and Vaea Fifita returned to play their second match of the season (off the bench), both having previously appeared in Round 1 against the Blues. For Fidow it was his 17th match for the Hurricanes: he is the record holder for playing the most matches without ever starting in one.

Ngani Laumape was awarded a yellow card, the seventh to be issued to the Hurricanes this year. All of the previous six cards were awarded to forwards.

A total of 32 players have made at least one appearance for the Hurricanes in 2021.

Tom Moody made his 100th appearance for the Crusaders.

Richie Mo’unga kicked 12 points for the Crusaders to take his overall tally against the Hurricanes to 160 points.

He is the Crusaders second highest point scorer against the Hurricanes, behind Daniel Carter who has scored a total of 193 points. In his 12 appearances against the franchise Mo’unga’s points per match have been: five, 15, seven, nine, 15, 16, 12, 20, 19, 17, 13 and 12 at an average of 13.3 points a match. In this match Mo’unga did not miss any of his five attempts at goal and when the two sides met earlier in Round 2 he missed just one of his five attempts.

George Bridge scored two tries to take his tally in all matches against the Hurricanes to five. Sevu Reece scored one try and he also has five tries against the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes overall record in all Super Rugby matches is played 354, won 200, lost 148 and drawn six.
