This week in club rugby history: 29 April – 5 May

Petone score a try in their 25-24 F.J Tilyard Memorial Shield win in 2013.

In association with the Bond Street Sports Bar on Bond Street in Wellington, some highlights from this week in Wellington club rugby history are below.

29 April

1983: Poneke beat MSP 22-21 with captain Grant Griffith potting a last moment 40-metre dropped goal for victory. MSP had led 21-0 after just 15 minutes, but Poneke have clawed their way back and time their win perfectly.

30 April

1955: After accounting for Wellington College Old Boys 34-8 in last week’s opening round, Petone dispatch Taita 31-3.  A feature of this win is ex All Black fullback Bob Scott scoring a try and converting four of Petone’s seven tries. The Wellington club rugby scene is soon to be rocked, however, with axed Petone and Wellington rep first five-eighth Jackie Dougan left out of Petone’s 18-man squad for the first two matches and about to announce a move to Onslow where he will win the 1955 Jubilee Cup for his new club.

1966: University are going to be Jubilee Cup champions later in the year, but are downed 6-19 by Wellington today. Wellington’s forward play is more cohesive than University’s and flanker Graham Williams and first five-eighth Mattie Blackburn are standouts.

1 May

1965: Marist pips St Pat’s Old Boys 19-18 in a Father Cleary Shield thriller at Athletic Park. Marist’s four tries trumps the boot of St Pat’s Old Boys’ Brian Frederickson who scores all 18 of their points. For defending Jubilee Cup co-champions Marist, No. 8 Paul Russo and centre Graeme Bowerman are standouts.

1976: The Wellington Axemen are the only unbeaten team thus far, following their 33-7 win over Naenae Old Boys. Captain and flanker Graham Williams scores a hat-trick, while new Wellington representative No. 8 Murray Mexted stands out.

1993: Petone and Wellington first five-eighth Simon Mannix hops off a plane from Italy to score a try and two penalties to give Petone a 26-14 win over Harlequins and steer them into next week’s Swindale Shield final.

2 May

1964: Incumbent New Zealand Maori All Black Pat Myers scores four of six tries in Marist Old Boys’ 26-8 win over Poneke. The win, Marist’s third on the trot to start the new season, sees them level pegging with University early on who beat Hutt 24-3 with fullback Mick Williment scoring two tries. Marist and University go on to share this year’s Jubilee Cup.

1987: WCOB first five-eighth Steven Pokere stars in his team’s 22-6 win over Poneke for the Beet Algar Rosebowl. The White Tigers lead 12-3 at halftime at the interval and pull clear in the second spell. Elsewhere, Andrew Smids kicks a whopper 70-metre penalty in the first minute of Upper Hutt’s 12-6 win over University.

1998: A superb defensive effort gives Poneke a 9-8 win over Western Suburbs, but in a bizarre finish both teams think they have won afterwards. Wests captain Wayne Brill and Poneke skipper Richard Watt both raise their arms in triumph upon the fulltime whistle. Wests go on to win the Jubilee Cup. Johnsonville beat Harlequins 27-19, thanks to a brilliant solo try to Ali Koko.

2005: Upper Hutt confirms themselves as Swindale Shield favourites by beating Northern United 10-5 in this top-of-the-table round five clash. Norths score first but Upper Hutt come back with a penalty and a converted try to fullback Cory Jane after a quick tap. Upper Hutt’s forwards smash Norths in the set-pieces, keeping out a late rally.

3 May

1952: Red-hot University are beaten in the forwards by Onslow, but survive on scraps to bear Onslow 13-8 courtesy of scoring a last-minute try. Jim Fitzgerald combines with Ron Jarden to turn a certain draw into a win for the students.

1975: Athletic storm to a 22-12 win over previously unbeaten Petone in this fifth round clash. Petone had jumped to a 12-0 lead after 15 minutes but Athletic fullback Brian Cederwall drops a goal and kicks three penalties to claw the points back. More dropped goals from other players follow as Athletic take victory. Elsewhere, young fullback Murray Tocker scored all his side’s points in Hutt Valley Marist’s 13-4 win over soon-to-be champions Poneke.

1986: The Andy Leslie-coached Petone team fight back from 9-18 down at halftime to beat Poneke 42-18, to remain the only unbeaten side after six rounds. Allan Hewson scores 30 points. Petone have scored 193 points and conceded 51 to date this season.

2002: Norm Broughton scores four tries in MSP’s  44-20 win over Tawa at Lyndhurst Park.

4 May

Tawa edged OBU this week in 2013 – on their way to winning the Swindale Shield – Jubilee Cup double.

2013: A day of dramatic results. Tawa claim their sixth win in seven matches over a spirited Old Boys University, scoring the winning try late and then holding on to win 22-19. Rimutaka grab headlines for the wrong reasons, losing 0-127 to HOBM and the scoreboard short circuits. Petone edge Poneke 25-24, Wainuiomata beat Marist St Pat’s 31-24 on MSP’s Old Timers’ Day and Norths account for Wests by the 97-48 in a free-wheeling fixture.

5 May

1962: Defending champions Petone grab a surprisingly comfortable 33-3 win over Athletic today. Petone wing Pat Myers scores a hat-trick, to give him eight tries in three games this season. Onslow and Marist, who go ion to jointly win this year’s Jubilee Cup, also post victories. Onslow defeats WCOB 12-0 and Marist beats Taita 21-3.

1990: Hutt Old Boys prop Mike Edwards scores a 77th minute try to give his side an 18-15 victory over MSP. Upper Hutt continues to set a hot pace, beating Ories 28-13 and registering their sixth straight win.

2018: It has taken 25 attempts, but Paremata-Plimmerton have finally broken their Swindale Shield duck away from home with their 14-8 win over Wellington at Hataitai. Since entering Premier rugby in 2015 they’ve only tasted success three times away from Ngatitoa, all in the 2016 Hardham Cup where they beat OBU B, MSP B, and Johnsonville. The run of play is tight on a typically gravelly day at Hataitai, with the winning try scored in the 78th minute and converted from the sideline. The two clubs’ Colts sides meet for the inaugural  Daniel Baldwin Memorial Cup, following Baldwin’s passing while playing for the Axemen in this match last year.
