Swindale Shield Matchday Scoring Highlights: Round One MSP (58) v Norths (22)

Round One of the 2026 Swindale Shield came to Porirua Park where home team Northern United met Marist St Pat’s for the Maurice Standish Cup.

In breezy conditions, home side Norths scored first and late led 12-7 during the first half. MSP got their noses ahead 19-12 by halftime. Early in the second half a MSP penalty and third Norths try made it 22-17 to MSP and a classic battle was on the cards

Who can forget Norths 12-10 win under a rainbow at Evans Bay Park in 2008? Or the Jubilee Cup final later that season in which these teams drew 10-10 and the title was shared?

It wasn’t to be, however, as a combination of a yellow card to Norths and a super-dominant scrum and better functioning lineout opened the door for the MSP backs to dazzle. They ran in several tries and raced clear. Norths scored a swift consolation try at the end.
