Hurricanes v Waratahs Stat Attack

Proctor also equalled the Hurricanes record for most tries in a match against the Waratahs: Kini Naholo scored three during the match played at Wellington last year.

Proctor has scored two tries in a match on two occasions (including once against the Waratahs in 2021) and three once.

Proctor’s second try was the 400th for the Hurricanes in all matches played outside New Zealand.

Billy Proctor has scored tries in each of the first three matches this year and we have to go back to 2017 for the last time this happened. Julian Savea was the player and in fact he scored tries in each of the first five matches he played.

In association with Hurricanes statistics compiler Peter Marriott, the Stat Attack returns in 2026. Facts and figures from the Hurricanes’ win over the Waratahs in Sydney below.

Round 4 v Waratahs: Won 59-19

The Hurricanes and the Waratahs have now met 29 times. The Hurricanes have won 19 of those matches and the Waratahs 10.

The Hurricanes have won the last nine matches on the trot. Their last loss to the Waratahs was at Wellington in 2015 (24-29) and the last defeat in Australia was at Sydney (30-39) the year before.

The Hurricanes record against the Waratahs in Australia is eight wins and seven losses from 15 encounters.

The Hurricanes equalled their record for most points scored in the second half of a Super Rugby match. They had previously scored 42 points in the second half against the Brumbies at Napier in 2017 (won 56-21) and against Moana Pasifika at Wellington in 2023 (won 71-22).

The Hurricanes passed 50 points in a match for the 26th time including twice in their three matches played this year. They have now put 50 points on the Waratahs three times including their previous encounter last year.

The Waratahs have passed 50 points against the Hurricanes once: in their very first Super Rugby match at Sydney in 1996.

The nine tries scored by the Hurricanes against the Waratahs took their total to 111. This is a new record for most tries against an Australian side. The Hurricanes have scored 110 against the Brumbies, 100 against the Reds, 79 against the Rebels and 75 against the Force.

The Waratahs have scored 88 tries against the Hurricanes which means the aggregate of tries scored between the two sides is 199.

The Waratahs three tries in the match took their total against the Hurricanes in matches played in Australia to exactly 50. The Hurricanes total is 52.

For the third time in the Hurricanes first three matches in 2026, the opposition side scored the first points.

At the end of Round 4 the Hurricanes lie in third place in the standings, up one place from fourth the previous week.

The Hurricanes made four changes to their starting XV from the one which took the field in their previous match against the Fijian Drua. All four changes were in the forwards.

Three players, namely Du’Plessis Kirifi, Jone Rova and Pasilio Tosi appeared for the first time in 2026. After three matches the Hurricanes have used a total of 29 players.

Kirifi and Jordie Barrett co-captained the Hurricanes for the first time together.

This round was designated the Club Rugby Round and all the players wore their club rugby socks.

The Hurricanes played in a jersey which was mainly black as opposed to the predominately yellow jersey which has been the tradition.

Asafo Aumua scored his 16th try in his 78th Super Rugby match. He has now scored three against the Waratahs.

Peter Lakai’s try was his 10th in 40 matches. It was his first against the Waratahs.

Billy Proctor has scored tries in each of the first three matches this year and we have to go back to 2017 for the last time this happened. Julian Savea was the player and in fact he scored tries in each of the first five matches he played.

Bailyn Sullivan scored his 15th and 16th try in 43 appearances for the Hurricanes. He now has four against the Waratahs.

Sullivan has scored two tries in a match twice and of course shares the Hurricanes record for most tries in a match: four against the Chiefs at Wellington last year.

Ereatara Enari’s try was his second in 15 matches.

Jone Rova scored for the second time in just three matches for the Hurricanes.

Jordie Barrett’s 10 points took him past 800 in his 113th Super Rugby match for the Hurricanes. He now sits on 806 points made up of 30 tries, 190 conversions and 92 penalty goals. Barrett has scored 66 points against the Waratahs.

In his second match for the Hurricanes, Lucas Cashmore kicked two conversions.

Callum Harkin also contributed two points.

Three different players kicked seven conversions between them. This has only happened once before in a Hurricanes match. Against the Force at Wellington in 2010, Willie Ripia, Piri Weepu and Aaron Cruden all kicked one conversion.

However, in 2006, and in successive matches against the Waratahs and the Crusaders, Weepu, David Holwell and Jimmy Gopperth all kicked at least one penalty.

Cameron Roigard became the 68th player to appear in 50 matches for the Hurricanes. He made his debut against the Crusaders at Wellington in 2021. He started in 34 of his matches and was a substitute in 16. Since his debut he has missed 22 matches.

Brad Shields played his 130th Super Rugby match and lies in fifth place on the all-time Hurricanes list for most match appearances. Ahead of him are TJ Perenara (163), Julian Savea (152), Dane Coles (141) and Ardie Savea (131). It should be mentioned both Julian Savea and Shields also played a non-Super Rugby match against the British & Irish Lions in 2017.

Shields has started 99 of his Super Rugby matches and been a substitute in 31 of them.

Warner Dearns wore the No 4 jersey for the first time. His previous two starts had been in the No 5 jersey.

Triston Reilly scored the Waratahs opening try against the Hurricanes. It was his first against them.

Max Jorgensen scored twice in the match and now has three tries against the Hurricanes. Jorgensen has been a try-scoring machine for the Waratahs in 2026. He has scored two tries in each of the three matches he has played so far.

Lawson Creighton kicked two points to go with the seven he scored in last years match.

On debut Sid Harvey was successful with his only shot at goal, a conversion.

Neither side attempted to kick a penalty goal during the match.

Yellow cards were issued to Angus Blyth and George Poolman.

James Doleman refereed his 17th match which involved the Hurricanes. It was his first Hurricanes/Waratahs match. The Hurricanes have won 14 of their matches with Doleman in charge and lost three.

Overall, the Hurricanes have now played 425 Super Rugby matches. They have won 245 (57.6%), lost 173 and drawn seven.
