A stoic defensive shift combined with some sparkling counterattacks powered Petone to a convincing 37-15 victory over Pōneke in their opening Jubilee Cup fixture on Saturday.
Petone scored two tries to left wing Jacib Tainui and first-five Rory Woollett kicked two penalties to give them a 23-3 halftime lead. Petone scored again early in the second half to make it 30-3. Wing Lachie Forbes broke clear to score the final try.
Pōneke scored two second half tries that closed the gap, and briefly threatened a comeback.
The result means Petone travel to play Paremata-Plimmerton this coming Saturday in round two of the Jubilee Cup and Pōneke drop down to the tier 2 Hardham Cup and host the Wellington Axemen at home.
