The Hurricanes edged the Reds in their Super Rugby fixture at Brisbane on Saturday night. Facts and figures from the game by Hurricanes statistics managing director Peter Marriott.
Round 15 v Reds: Won 31-27
The Hurricanes and the Reds have now played 27 matches together: the Hurricanes have won 21 and the Reds just six.
Those 21 wins against the Reds is the record for the Hurricanes against an Australian side. They have beaten the Waratahs 18 times.
The Hurricanes have now won 10 matches in a row against the Reds. Their last loss was in 2013 (12-18) in Brisbane. Prior to that loss the Hurricanes had won the four previous matches.
The Hurricanes last played the Reds in Brisbane eight years ago and since then have met them three times in Wellington, once in Townsville and once in Melbourne, a neutral venue.
The Hurricanes have won their last six matches against the Reds in Australia.
Whilst on the subject of winning sequences the Hurricanes best is against the Rebels: 12 matches in a row between 2012 and 2024. They have also beaten the Force 10 matches in succession between 2008 and 2021.
Of the other New Zealand sides the Hurricanes have had a winning streak of nine in a row against both the Blues and the Highlanders but have “struggled” against the Chiefs with a best of four and the Crusaders with a best of three.
The Hurricanes have not lost to an Australian side in 2025: they beat the Waratahs 57-12, drew with the Force 17-17, beat the Brumbies 35-29 and the Reds 31-27.
For the fifth match in a row a Hurricanes forward has failed to score a try. Peter Lakai was the last to do so: against the Crusaders at Wellington in Round 9. Since his try, there have been 21 scored, all by the backs.
Hurricanes players have scored two or more tries in each of the last six matches. That has not happened before.
This was the Hurricanes 100th win in 213 matches (46.9%) at away from home venues.
The Hurricanes have scored 199 tries in matches in Australia.
This was the Hurricanes third match this year and second in succession in which they won by a margin of four points. It is the 15th time they have done so altogether and includes four times against the Reds.
The Hurricanes scored 26 points in the first half against the Reds. That is their highest halftime score against any side this season. They had scored 24 points after 40 minutes against the Waratahs.
After 15 rounds the Hurricanes and the Crusaders are the only sides which have won four matches in a row.
However, the Crusaders lost both matches before and after their sequence whereas the Hurricanes have won their last four following a draw against the Force. The Brumbies are currently sitting on three match wins in a row.
The Hurricanes have now scored exactly 100 tries against the Reds. There are six other sides they have brought up 100 tries against: the Chiefs (142), the Highlanders (141), the Blues (133), the Crusaders (113), the Brumbies (106) and the Waratahs (102).
The Hurricanes have scored 53 tries in 2025, the 13th occasion they have reached the half century and the fifth year in succession.
The Reds have twice scored 27 points against the Hurricanes. The first time was at Brisbane in 2001 when they won 27-18.
Having declined to do so in their first 12 matches of this season, the Reds attempted a penalty goal: two in fact which were both successful.
The Reds did not kick a penalty in their final match of 2024 (the Quarter-final against the Chiefs) and were successful with only one in the match prior to that against the Waratahs. Tom Lynagh kicked that penalty in the 75th minute and his first against the Hurricanes was in the 10th minute. By my calculation the Reds went 1055 minutes (give or take) of playing time between those two penalties.
The Hurricanes made five changes to their starting line-up from that which started in the previous match against the Highlanders. Three of those changes were in the backs and two in the forwards.
For the first time ever the Hurricanes started a match with four co-captains on the field. They were Asafo Aumua,Brad Shields, Du’Plessis Kirifi and Billy Proctor. There have been earlier occasions when four co-captains were nominated but each time one of them was listed on the bench.
Daniel Sinkinson (started) and Devan Flanders (off the bench) made their first appearance of 2025. They brought the number of players to have played at least one match this season to 38.
Ruben Love scored his seventh try in his 41st match. It was his fourth try against the Reds (one in 2021 and two in 2024). He kicked six points off the boot to take his total in 2025 to 57. In all matches Love has scored 94 points, just six shy of bringing up 100.
Cameron Roigard scored his 18th try in his 45th match. He has scored four tries against the Reds in three successive matches: one in Townsville in 2023 and two in the match at Melbourne in 2024, the same match in which Love scored his two.
Billy Proctor’s try was his 19th in 66 matches for the Hurricanes. He also scored a try against the Reds at Townsville in 2023.
Fatafehi Fineanganofo scored two tries to take his tally in 10 matches to five. This was the second time this season he has scored a double in a match: also against the Force at Perth in Round 10.
This match against the Reds was the 150th in which a Hurricanes player scored two or more tries.
Reds Captain Tate McDermott picked up two tries and now has four against the Hurricanes: he also scored in 2021 and 2024.

Jeffery To’omaga-Allen, who appeared off the bench for the Reds, played 117 Super Rugby matches for the Hurricanes between 2012 and 2019.
Paul Williams refereed his second match of the season which involved the Hurricanes (the first was against the Brumbies) and his 13th overall. It was the first time he has controlled a Hurricanes/Reds match.
The Hurricanes finished the round in fourth place in the Standings, their highest position this year and up from fifth place the previous week.
The Reds slipped down to fifth place after being one position ahead of the Hurricanes the previous week.
