New players to feature in Super Rugby squads in 2025

The Hurricanes have nine new signings in their 38-player squad, some of whom could also be in line to make their Swindale Shield debuts next season.

The full squad, as released this morning, is listed below.

There are 12 Wellington players in the Hurricanes squad, these being: Asafo Aumua (Avalon), TJ Clarke (Petone) Caleb Delany (OBU), Riley Higgins (Petone), Du’plessis Kirifi (Norths), Peter Lakai (Petone), Siale Lauaki (Tawa), Ruben Love (Wainuiomata), Xavier Numia (Ories), Billy Proctor (MSP), Brad Shields (Petone) and Peter Umaga-Jensen (Wainuiomata).

In other squads, Kyle Preston (OBU) has been named in the Crusaders, Matt Proctor (Ories) is in the Force, PJ Sheck (Tawa) in the Blues and Losi Filipo (Petone), Jackson Garden-Bachop (Norths), Pepesana Patafilo (Tawa) Ardie Savea (Ories), Julian Savea (Ories) are all at Moana Pasifika.

Of other Wellington players, Callum Harkin (OBU) has a training contract with the Hurricanes, while we have sought clarification on the status of others, in particular both James ‘O’Reilly (HOBM) and Hugo Plummer (Tawa). O’Reilly’s recent NPC season was hampered by a neck injury so he could be injured.

Plummer’s Tawa and Wellington Lions locking teammate Akira Ieremia is off to Japan for three years. It is understood that he was offered a training contract with the Chiefs but has opted for Japan, the land of his birth, for his immediate playing future.

There are also a handful of former Wellington players in other squads, such as Naitoa Ah Kuoi (MSP) in the Chiefs and Jeff Toomaga-Allen (MSP) in the Reds.

Former Rongotai College and Norths outside back Reon Paul is in the Blues, out of Bay of Plenty.

Also in the Hurricanes for the first time from home unions are Hawke’s Bay lock Tom Allen and Manawatū lock Josh Taula.

Of last year’s Hurricanes, Manawatu’s TK Howden is one player joining another Super Rugby side. Howden is joining the Highlanders.

The 2025 Super Rugby season kicks off in mid-February.
