Matchday scoring highlights: Ed Chaney Cup OBU (33) v Petone (30)

The two sides met at Rugby League Park on Saturday in the opening match of the 2024 Ed Chaney Cup second round Premier 2 competition.

This was a ‘top 4’ match, between OBU (seeded first) and Petone (fourth), with the winner earning  this coming weekend off and the vanquished playing again this Saturday.

OBU first five Tom Henderson kicked two late penalties to level and then win the game after there was a chance that the game would be going into extra time at 30-30. Minutes earlier, Petone had come back to score a well taken try to second five Alex Foy, after they launched a decisive raid up the shortside towards the corner.

OBU themselves had scored a great try not long before when they attacked from a scrum on halfway after a Petone kick-off error. Right wing Ollie Cuff kicked ahead, and the ball bounced up from a defender’s grasp and first five Henderson ran in the try. Petone had led 23-17 at half time scoring their second try right on the interval.

Previously, both sides had scored one additional try in the first half and the rest of the scoring was from penalties off the kicking tee. OBU first five and goal-kicker Tom Henderson scored 23 of his team’s points.

  1. After all the amazing achievements from rugby players over the season it amazes me that there is no mention about the jville player who scored 5 try’s against msp a few weeks ago this achievement deserves a mention as not many people achieve this in premier rugby
