The two clubs met at Lyndhurst Park, Tawa, on Tawa’s Old Timers’ Day, for the Carman Cup.
Tawa won a thriller 40-35. They scored the winning try with the final play of the game, from a scrum and vigorous probe at the line near the posts and then a pass out wide for the try in the corner in front of the clubrooms.
Johnsonville halfback had moments before kicked his third penalty of the match to see scores level at 35-35.
In an end-to-end match, with several momentum and scoring changes, Johnsonville led 15-14 midway through the first half and then 22-21 at halftime.
Tawa scored first in the second half but Johnsonville replied and it remained close and willing right to the end, and it was small moments that ultimately won the match for Tawa.
