The two clubs met for the Marc Verhoeven Trophy in round three of the 2024 Swindale Shield.
It was also Old Boys University’s Old Timers’ Day.
The match was played in ideal conditions in front of a healthy crowd of supporters from both clubs. Petone had the use of several represeantive contracted players in backs, such as Harry Godfrey, Riley Higgins, Losi Filipo and Ngani Punivai. But it was Old Boys University’s well-drilled forwards that got stuck into the game early and with three tries, including two to hooker Louie Calvert from lineout drives in the corner, and a penalty they led 24-0.
Petone scored just before halftime to close to 24-7, but they then lost a player to the sin-bin. That proved a catalyst of sorts and their backs clicked into gear and they came back to take the lead with about 10 minutes to play and then pulled clear at the end.
The final score was 40-29 to Petone.
