Final weekend of pre-season for club rugby teams

It is the final weekend of preparations before the start of the Premier club rugby competitions in Wellington, Manawatu and elsewhere, while the Horowhenua-Kapiti competition gets underway.

Many clubs are holding internal camps, practice sessions and summits, while others will be taking to the field against like-minded opposition tomorrow.

Starting in Wellington, three Premier Swindale Shield clubs are playing matches against opposition from outside the region.

At Porirua Park, Northern United are playing Waikato side Hamilton Old Boys. Kick-off on their No. 2 ground is 2.30pm.

Also at Porirua Park, the Norths Colts are playing the MSP Colts and Wellington Axemen Colts at 11.30am, up on the top field.

At Rugby League Park, nearby Poneke play Taranaki club Tukapa. Kick-off there is 2.00pm. There is also a curtain-raiser at RLP at 12.00pm, this being Poneke Premier 2 v Stokes Valley.

At William Jones Park, Wainuiomata are hosting Manawatu club Te Kawau in two inter-squad matches. The Colts kick-off at 1.00pm and the combined Premier/Premier 2 [Senior A/B] squads kick off at 2.30pm. The Wainuiomata Premier 2s are over the hill in Wairarapa-Bush playing Pioneer.

Also in the Hutt, Wellington clubs Avalon and Old Boys University meet at Naenae College at 11.00am in their last match before the start of the Swindale Shield next week.

In a match at Rongotai College, the Oriental-Rongotai and Petone Premier 2 squads kick-off at 11.00am and the Premier Squads at 1.00pm.

Johnsonville head over the hill to play Carterton. Kick-off is 2.00pm.  The Johnsonville Colts kick-off at 12.30pm at the same venue against Palmerston North College Old Boys.

Wellington clubs with the weekend off playing outside opposition include the Upper Hutt Rams, Hutt Old Boys Marist, Paremata-Plimmerton, Tawa, Marist St Pat’s and the Wellington Axemen (TBC).

There are some U85kg pre-competition games being played around Wellington tomorrow.

There is a series of short encounters at the St Pat’s Town Artificial tomorrow afternoon involving the Wellington, Ories, MSP and Eastbourne teams.

The Petone and Paremata-Plimmerton U85kg sides are meeting at North Park, Petone at 1.15pm. This match at North Park is preceded by the Petone and OBU Green Colts at the noon hour.

The Paremata-Plimmerton Women, Wainuiomata Women and Poneke Women are playing a mix and match game at Ngati Toa Domain from 10.30am.

There are also some pre-season First XV matches being played on Saturday. Amongst these, Aotea College host Kapiti College at 11.00am, HIBS play Palmerston North Boys’ High School Second XV squad at the NZCIS ground at 1.00pm and Wellington College travel to play Feilding High School at 2.30pm.

It’s also the first round of the Horowhenua-Kapiti Ramsbotham Cup competition.

Back to the rugby,  there are three Hurricanes teams in action tomorrow,
The Hurricanes Men’s side are in Auckland playing Moana Pasifikia in Auckland, kick-off at 7.05pm

The Hurricanes Women’s Poua are playing a consolation Super Rugby Aupiki fixture against the Blues Women, at Waikato Stadium at 11.35am.

Down the road, the Hurricanes U20s are playing the Blues U20s in the final of the Super Rugby U20s competition. Kick-off in Taupo is at 4.35pm.
