For the first time since 2020, St Patrick’s College, Silverstream, are Wellington Open Boys Condor Sevens champions.

Silverstream added the Christian Cullen Cup to their First XV Premiership title from last August, their White team playing through unbeaten and beating Wellington College 24-12  in the final.

In fine, blustery conditions at the tournament’s regular venue Naenae College, Wellington College opened the scoring through Navrin Campbell, but Silverstream replied twice to lead 12-5 at halftime.

Silverstream almost scored from the opening second half kick-off and were soon in for their third try after a Wellington College mistake running the ball back in front of their own posts. The final was clinched soon after when Ryder Thompson finished off a sweeping movement to score their fourth try. Wellington College answered with a consolation try in the shadows of fulltime.

For Silverstream, Heath Tuifao was our Player of the Tournament, making a series of storming runs throughout the day and backing these up with a high workrate.

Silverstream also won the tournament after losing playmaker Fletcher Cooper to an ankle inury in their round-robin fixture against Tawa College earlier in the day.

Their results on the day read: 70-0 v Mana College, 52-7 v Tawa College, 33-24 v Scots College, 36-5 v Hutt International Boys’ School (semi-final), 24-12 v Wellington College (final).

Silverstream’s semi-final win over defending champions HIBS was sealed early in the second half, after leading three tries to one at halftime. HIBS were brought down in the corner in the committed covering tackled and Abraham Smith scored at the other end soon after.

Wellington College had defeated Tawa College 26-14 in the other Cup semi-final. It was close early and Wellington College led two tries to one at halftime, before pulling clear.

At the start of the day, Tawa College had beaten Scots College 24-19, in a result that ultimately decided the top four. Scots later beat St Bernard’s College 22-17 to win the Plate Final.

There was success for the St Bernard’s College U15s, who took out the U15 tournament.

Scores had been locked up after a pair of early tries, before Scots broke out and scored a kick and collect try to take a 14-7 lead into halftime.

After a minute in possession, St Bernard’s crossed to close the lead to 14-12, and they then scored from a tap penalty inside the 22 on fullti to win the final.

Previously, Scots had beaten Wellington College 24-7 in their semi-final and St Bernard’s had defeated Silverstream’s U15s in a crossover knockout match that served as a de facto semi-final.

The U15 Girls decider for the Tanoa Cup was even more hard-fought.

Aotea College’s team won the Girls 15 tournament.

Aotea College had cut through early to score three consecutive tries to lead Wellington Girls’ College 17-0.

Wellington Girls’ regrouped and scored two tries, including their second on halftime after a minute in possession.

They then scored first after halftime to lock it up at three tries all, but none were converted. Both sides scored again and Aotea College held a 24-22 lead, which was the final score.

Aotea had previously beat Wellington Girls’ 31-17 when they met in pool play, after earlier edging Scots 26-24 in their first match of the day and then beating Sacred Heart College 36-10.

The tournament was, as always, run like clockwork by College Sport Wellington, with support from the WRRA, who wore black armbands in memory of recently lost member Memphis Strachan.
