Matchday Scoring Highlights: Old Boys University (28) v Wainuiomata (26)

The Old Boys University Premiers beat Wainuiomata 28-26 in their Premier Swindale Shield fixture at Ian Galloway Park on Saturday, for the Peter Dunford Cup.

The match was played under a dipping sun at Ian Galloway Park, with Wainuiomata having advantage of a gentle wind in the first half and climbing into their work and racing to an early 10-0 lead with penalty and then the first try of the match to fullback Campbell Cowie first phase off a scrum.

Two more penalties followed and the visitors led 16-0, before OBU scored on halftime threw a 50m solo try to halfback Mitch McLeod.

Wainuiomata went up 21-7 with their second try early in the second half, OBU came back with a second Mcleod try off a lineout move before Cowie and first five Andrew Wells combined on the counterattack to score to make it 26-14.

The best part of the next 15 minutes saw Wainuiomata pinning OBU inside their own half, before OBU broke out to score through centre Elijah Maene Lokeni to make it 26-21. In the 75th minute, OBU kicked deep and forced a mistake and the centre scored his second try and the match-winner.

The Premier 2 curtain-raiser between the second XVs of the same two clubs was also won by Old Boys University.
