Easter Weekend Rugby preview

A mostly light weekend of rugby this Easter Weekend for Wellington clubs as most hunker down and put the finishing touches on their preparations ahead of the start of all grades together next Saturday, 6 April.

In fact, there is one solitary pre-season match scheduled in Wellington on Saturday, and that is between the Upper Hutt Rams Colts and the Northern United Colts at Maidstone Park 2 at 11.00am.

Following that there is a flurry of youth rugby in the eastern suburbs on Monday, with the MSP Colts and the St Pat’s Town First XV meeting at Evans Bay Park at 1.00pm in their annual Xavier Reidy Memorial Cup match.

Over at the Polo Ground on Monday is the second annual ‘Club of Origin’, between the Oriental-Rongotai and Poneke clubs.

There are two age-grade matches being played with trophies on the line. The U15 fixture for the Grant Griffith Cup at 11.45am, with the Tuma’ai Medal awarded for the Player of the Match, and the U18 game for the Aukuso Cup at 1.30pm, with the Hemi Tui Medal for the match MVP.

There was a re-jig to the previously advertised Horowhenua-Kapiti Premier draw, with all seven clubs now having the long weekend off and games resuming next weekend.

The action today is in the Manawatu with the opening round of the Manawatu Senior 1 [Premier] competition.

The season opened at Linton Camp on Thursday night with visitors Kia Toa beating the home team 45-22.

There are three more matches being played this afternoon (Good Friday), with Feilding Yellows hosting Feilding Old Boys Oroua at Johnston Park and two matches being played at Arena Manawatu. These games are Varsity v College Old Boys in a replay of last year’s final and Old Boys Marist v Te Kawau. Kick-offs are 2.45pm.

Further afield, it’s round two of the Hawke’s Bay Premier Nash Cup competition, check guides for the draw.

Also this afternoon, Petone plays Ponsonby at Auckland, kick-off 3.05pm and live on Sky TV. See our standalone story looking at this match as part of Ponsonby’s 150th anniversary celebrations:
