Matchday Scoring highlights: Wellington Māori v Wellington Samoa

The two teams met in their annual ‘Clash of Cultures’ fixture at Ngati Toa Domain on Saturday.

The match was contested in bright sunshine and with a moderate northerly breeze but on a heavy and sticky field following winter rain. Both teams took a long time to find their combinations and connections with plenty of early movement but several passes thrown into touch and similar errors.

Finally, the scoring came alive from late in the second half, with the Wellington Māori scoring first after a long passage of play. Wellington Samoa struck with two tries of their own right before halftime, kickstarted by a turnover and long-range try. Wellington Samoa led 10-5 at halftime.

Wellington Māori took the lead early in the second half and extended this to 31-17 late in the game. Samoa scored a consolation try right on fulltime and the final score was 31-22 to Wellington Māori. They won the Connor Garden-Bachop Taonga.
