Ten in a row – St Mary’s defend Premier 1 Girls title

Fulltime in the final, with St Mary’s having comfortably won the Premier 1 Wellington Girls title.

That’s a 10-peat of titles for the St Mary’s College Premier 1 rugby team.

The crack schoolgirls rugby school completed a decade of College Sport Wellington competition wins on the trot with a 98-0 win over Wellington East Girls’ College in the final at Porirua Park this evening.

The final was played in fine, still conditions and St Mary’s ran in 15 tries after leading 50-0 at halftime.

Some early line breaks led directly to tries for St Mary’s.

Heading into the final, St Mary’s (1) had beaten Aotea College (4) 54-29 in their semi-final, whilst WEGC (3) had defeated Sacred Heart College (2) 41-33 in their semi-final to arrive at the final.

Right wing Ana Kerr was the individual benefactor of a ruthless attacking side, scoring a first half hat-trick and kicking five conversions for 25 points. She then laid on a try with an assist early in the second spell before being subbed.

As the scoreline suggests, St Mary’s were far too clinical for WEGC in all departments, winning a barrage of penalties at the breakdowns and cutting through their defences all too easily. The title was in the bag after 10 minutes when they led 19-0. WEGC were also depleted with several players out beforehand. They showed glimpses of competitiveness, such as late in the first half and for a time in the second.

As well as Kerr, a number of St Mary’s players played well, such as fullback Emerald Tuhiwai-Polson who scored two of their last three tries, lock Abi Isaia, prop Casey Sio and flankers Fono Bason and Paige Lilo.

St Mary’s ended this year’s Wellington season with a record of 336 points for and 44 against. WEGC ended this year’s Wellington season with a record of 110 points for and 227 against.

St Mary’s 10th straight Wellington rugby title win puts them temporarily ahead of their netball team who have won nine in a row and will be gunning for their 10th straight College Sport Wellington RSSL competition title should they make the final later this month.

St Mary’s now turn their attention to the Hurricanes qualifying series to make the National Top 4 tournament in Palmerston North at the end of this month.

St Mary’s play Hastings Girls’ High School in neutral Masterton next Monday. The winner of that game plays the winner of the Manukura v Feilding High School game that is being played on Wednesday in the final of the Hurricanes region Rex Kerr Cup.

Details of the date and venue for the Rex Kerr Cup final is yet to be confirmed.

St Mary’s and Manukura were the best two teams in the country last year, but only one could make it through, and that was Manukura who went on to become national champions.

Next Tuesday sees WEGC playing Wellington Girls’ College in their traditional at Kilbirnie Park.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Farah Palmer Cup NPC competition starts this coming Weekend. The Wellington Pride open their Division 2 campaign against Tasman in Nelson.
