The U16s are playing their final warm-up match before the 2026 HYRC U16s tournament kicks off, while the newly minted Co-ed Schools team is playing the first of its two matches, the second being against the Taranaki U18s next weekend.

At 1.00pm the Centurions U18s take on Hawke’s Bay in the third and final round of the HYRC U18s Division 1 competition. Both teams are unbeaten after the opening fortnight so this is a ‘virtual’ final and the winner will be presented with the John Hornal Shield afterwards. The Wellington team will be missing a few of their first-choice starters who will instead be at the Hurricanes U18s camp down the road at NZCIS, but four St Pat’s Silverstream players join the playing field for them for the first time.

At the same time over on the #2 pitch the Wellington Māori U18s face the Manawatu U18s in the 3 v 4 game.

Meanwhile in Division 2, the Wairarapa-Bush U18s will defend their title outright if they can secure a solitary bonus point from their match against Horowhenua-Kapiti in Masterton and Poverty Bay and Whanganui meet for third and fourth in Gisborne.

The Wellington Māori U16s are over in Masterton to face their Wairarapa-Bush counterparts, and the U18 Girls and Centurions U18 Girls meet once again at Rugby League Park.

Following these matches, the eyes are quickly drawn to tomorrow’s double-header at the Stadium, where both senior sides need wins for somewhat different reasons.

The Wellington Pride are up first at 4.35pm, and following last weeks loss to Hawke’s Bay in Napier defence and discipline should have been the focus at training. They take on Championship leaders Northland with the Kauri have won all three matches, and another here would likely ensure that the road to the Premiership goes through Whangarei. Wellington can still end up in the driver’s seat with only Tasman to face next week, but that makes this a must-win.

Unsurprisingly, the coaching team have named what is probably the first-choice lineup available to them. With Arene Landon-Lane getting a deserved call-up to the Black Ferns, Keira Su’a-Smith remains at first-five though she hands the captaincy back to the returning Valini Vaka.

The Wellington Lions follow in the primetime slot, looking to get off the duck egg for the season and somehow drag themselves away from the wooden spoon. They too face Northland opposition, with the Ranfurly Shield-holding Taniwha enjoying their best season in years and eyeing up adding the NPC crown to that. The old Log won’t be up for grabs, but those competition points are and they’re very valuable to each side, albeit for very different reasons.

Wellington are bolstered by the return of Siale Lauaki from the All Blacks tour, while James O’Reilly returns from injury. Caleb Delany is absent after failing an HIA against Canterbury, so Du’Plessis Kirifi takes over as captain, with that all amongst a raft of changes after the poor outing in Christchurch. Northland are resting a few of their frontliners too ahead of their final Ranfurly Shield defence next week, including halfback Sam Nock and first-five Rivez Reihana who are on the bench.

Heartland

Big matches for both our neighbouring Heartland provinces tomorrow in what could be a crucial sixth round. Horowhenua-Kapiti sit sixth, and will be aiming to break into the top four when they host third-placed Thames Valley at the Levin Doman at 1.00pm. Wairarapa-Bush are on the road in Westport to face Buller, and although they have their last two games both at home they currently sit ninth and can’t afford a loss to a side below them on the ladder.

Special day for two of the ‘Nua’s stalwarts with prop David McErlean and loose forward Aaron Lahmert both playing their 100th matches for the province.

Elsewhere, leaders King Country are up last tomorrow, with a 6.00pm kick-off under the lights at Owen Delany Park against East Coast, with South Canterbury hosting a border clash with neighbour North Otago in Timaru. Whanganui welcome Mid-Canterbury to Cooks Gardens, and Poverty Bay play their final home game against fellow strugglers West Coast.

Teams (as supplied):

Wellington Lions

1.Jake Turnbull (Import)
2.
