Fullback Manaia Rudolph then calmly slotted the sideline conversion to make it 29-28.

The referee’s clock was on the Centurions side and they rallied hard at the end to prevent any more incursions as fulltime was blown with them inside Manawatu’s half.

Earlier, the Centurions made a positive start, making the most of early possession and territory to build multiple phases and set up an attacking lineout in the far corner from a penalty. This year’s King Country side has a massive pack though, and like the Springboks play to the set piece and it was little surprise that their opening two tries came to hooker and captain Liam Rowlands from lineout drives.

In between Wai-Bush responded through flanker Van Prenter who had a strong game until suffering a potentially serious knee injury in the second half. The Bush held strong until last before the interval, when Rams blindside Reeve Satherley barged over, and with Hone Mathieson added the extras to all three, the competition leaders took a 21-5 lead to the break.

Despite the words of coach Jamie Williams ringing in their ears, the Bush conceded first in the second half when halfback Kristian Gent-Standen scampered away, and although Folau Finau-Vea pulled one back, Gent-Standen’s second largely put the game out of reach. Finau-Vea would grab a second himself, before a rapid-fire pair to centre Logan Patterson and replacement Josevata Mailmoce blew the lead out.

Bush replacement Harry Eschenbach – perhaps fortunate not to be carded for a tip tackle minute earlier – got the hosts a bonus point before Patterson completed his double. The Bush finished on a high though when replacement front rowers Sam Siaosi and George Parke both crossed in the final five minutes, with Parke’s 30m dash to the line getting easily the biggest cheer of the day.

In Ruatoria, Ories’ David Johnson scored five minutes into his Horowhenua-Kapiti debut as the Nua beat East Coast 50-34. It was a frantic opening with the score 19-12 to the visitors after just 16 minutes, but H-K then kicked away to lead 33-19 at the break with tries to Mika Alaifatu and Kafaonga Katoa and four conversions from Zane Ainslie. NPEC got to within nine points at one point in the second half, but the Nua put the foot down as Junior Sione and Connor Paki completed their doubles and Ainslie scored as well.

It was a day of high scoring across the Heartland, with no team failing to put 30 points on the scoreboard.

Whanganui rebounded from their loss to H-K last week to beat North Otago 57-39 in Oamaru, while it was a thriller up SH1 in Ashburton as South Canterbury edged out Mid-Canterbury 45-43.
